After passing the rocky edges of High and Low Millstones, the limestone fringe of the mountain was reached and the going became easier. A bridlepath was joined and followed down to the tiny hamlet of Sedbusk. From here 18 narrow fields were crossed using a series of squeezer stiles to reach Simonstone Hall, which was only a stone’s throw from Hardraw.

a light breeze and the forecast ed thunderstorms had not ma terialised. The bright yellow star like flowers of the bog as phodel was much in evidence and the heather, not usually seen until in August, was al ready in bloom.
