CLITHEROE Naturalists started their summer walk at Hellifield. After walking through the village, they
crossed over the railway track and Haw Lane track was followed. Lots of common spotted orchids were admired and a heron was seen standing by Hellifield beck. They carried on walking to Little New
ton Farm and on to Waterfall rock where lunch was had. Members then had a section of moor
land to walk over, where the highest point was reached and splendid views of the Ribble Valley and Pendle Hill could be admired. Dacre Lane track and Haw Lane track
was the way back to Hellifield. As it was a sunny warm day several

species of butterflies were active and sneezewort, betony, marsh willowherb, were noted, a total of 65 flower species. Migratory birds, wheatear, spotted fly catcher, swallow and swifts were also busy catching food. Murial Carruthers thanked the leaders.
