Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) 20 Clitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, August 3rd, 2006 www.clitheroetoday.co.uk Ciitheroe 422324 (Editoriai), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) Testament to women’s talent by Vivien Meath

TH E R E was plenty of good-natured rivalry a t S a to d a y ’s annual Clitheroe Area Women’s Institute Handicraft and

Produce Show. As the results of months of hard work,

patience and passion for their particular crafts went on display in the Chatbum Road hall at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School exhibitors and visitors could not fail to be impressed. The standard was exceptionally high, pro

viding the judges with a difficult task as they awarded sought-after points to institutes chasing the coveted trophies. The large institute of Great Harwood

reigned supreme taking the award for most points in show. Hurst Green’s competitive membership gave its bigger neighbour a good run, proving that size is not everything, and coUecting three trophies during the event. Best in show craft went to Simonstone

with Read’s Sylvia Hughes with her entry in the digitally-enhanced photograph class. Possibly the most admired category in this

year’s show was that for a doll. Entrants were provided with a pattern from which they made the “basic babe” doll and dressed it. There were some wonderful creations and, as with a number of show categories, the exhibits will undoubtedly become family heirlooms. Cast-off items of clothing were used to amazing effect to create a series of stunning dolls. Proof of the old adage “it’s the taking part that matters” was Judith

Bennett, of Simonstone with Read .whose doll carried a tag: “Absolutely Nothing to Wear”, after its designer hurt her hand prior to completing it! There were plenty of entries in the chil

dren’s section with a holiday theme in many of the categories. Youngsters painted peb bles, designed sandcastle flags, drew boats and made items from shells. With craft demonstrations, the popular

Country Market and a hard-working band of WI ladies providing tea, sandwiches and cakes throughout the day, the event was another success. Opening it, show chairman Pam Jelley

burst into song with “Another Opening, Another Show,” before paying tribute to the membership whose masterpieces ensured a successful event and the many family mem bers whose behind-the-scenes work was cru cial to the show taking place. ■JVithout a doubt, numerous families

throughout the area would have been look ing forward to their WI entrant’s return home on Saturday - with weekend meals enhanced by goodies from home-made wine to coffee sandwich cakes, quiches and cakes with unusual ingredients. And with every show, there is always a hidden disaster. One of those this year was at the home of a Hurst Green member whose carefully baked bread was equally carefully placed away from a vis iting four-legged friend the night before the exhibits were due to be displayed. Unfortu nately, someone left the door ajar and a pile of crumbs were all that remained of that par ticular entry!

Dispute over a car ends in court

A D ISPU T E over a second hand car landed a 45-year-old Whalley man in police cells for 39 hours. Blackburn magistrates heard

that Nicholas Talbot went to garage premises in Billington demanding £500 he claimed he was owed from the sale of his ear. But the owner of the garage, a

Mr Elliot called police alleging that threats had been made. Talbot, of Greenpark, Whal

ley, admitted a breach of the peace and was bound over in the sum of £100 to keep the peace for 12 months. Claire Panning (prosecuting)

said that when police arrived Talbot was demanding money from Mr Elliot who in turn wanted him removed from the premises. “He wouldn’t be placated and

was arrested,” said Miss Fan ning. Clare Knight (defending) said

Mr Elliot had sold a car for Tal bot and owed him £500. “He kept saying he would give

him the money tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow and my client had waited over a week,” said Miss Knight. “He went to speak to him and

accepts that things got out of hand. As a result he has spent 39 hours in custody.”

PACT night RESIDENTS in the Henthorn Road area of the town are being invited to a Police and Com munity Together (PACT) meeting tonight. The meeting

will be hosted by PC Tony Walsh, of Clitheroe pol ice. It will begin at

7 p.m. at the Henthorn Com munity Centre and a warm wel come is extended to all residents.

School throws open sports hall doors

A HIGH school in the Ribble Valley has opened its sports facilities for community use following a unique deal with its borough council. A new partnership between

Rowland High School, in Grindleton, and Ribble Valley Borough Council will see the school’s sports hall available for use in the evening and at weekends by local sports clubs and community groups. The hall is suitable for foot

ball, badminton, cricket, net- ball, basketball, table tennis, volleyball, gymnastics and trampolining. The council’s community

development manager, Chris Hughes, said: “A considerable level of interest has been expressed by potential hirers of the Rowland High School sports hall and discussions have been taking place as to how the facilities might best be used by the community out side school hours.” Under the new deal, the

school will be responsible for ensuring the facilities are safe for use by members of the pub lic and for keeping them clean. In turn, the council will pro vide a site supervisor to over see use of the facilities, as well as offer first aid support and

surveillance against misuse. A steering group comprising

Rowland High School repre sentatives, council officers and youth workers has been estab lished to oversee the scheme. The sports hall is available for hire from 6 to 10 p.m. Mon days to Fridays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays at a rate of £20 to £30 per hour. Fur ther details are available from Diane Miller on 01200 414586. An open evening for

prospective users will take place on Wednesday, August 16th, from 5 to 8-30 p.m.
