Ciitheroe 422324 (Editoriai), 422323 (Advertising), Burniey 422331 (Ciassified) Golden celebration for nature group

A R IB B L E Valley n a tu re group c e le b ra ted its» 5 0 th a n n iv e rsa ry w i th a special exhibition looking back a t its achievements during the past five decades. Ciitheroe Naturalists, which

was formed in 1956, hosted the special event in the Kibble Valley {Council Chamber, which included various displays of past events and scrap books dating back 25 years. The exhibition also showed

information from the annual sm- vey carried out by members on behalf of the Lancashire Wildlife Trust. The detailed records and notes

of the bird species and flowers spotted on walks undertaken by the Naturalists were also on view. Through the decades this infor

mation has enabled members to document the local effects of the changing climate. Ciitheroe Naturalists was

founded in 1956 by four men - Horace Cook, Bernard Sharpies, Tom Lord and William Marshall. Its original dim was to bring

local people together and use local Advertisement

transport to explore their sur roundings. I t gradually evolved into a bigger organisation, which started travelling further afield by coach and visiting the Lake Dis tr ic t and the Yorkshire Dales among other places. A programme of lectures has

also become part of the annual programme, originally taking place at Ribblesdale School before eventually moving to Ciitheroe Library where the group continues to meet through the winter months every fortnight. The group now has around 70

members and anyone wanting to find out more should call the chair man Mrs Muriel Carruthers on 01254 822196 or. the secretary Mr Brian Jones on 01200 423823. Our picture shows Ciitheroe

Dales awash after rain

HEAVY rainfall streamed down the hillsides of Lit- tondale during a recent walk enjoyed by Ciitheroe Naturalists. ■ With the weather fore

cast looking less than promising, the group set out for the Yorkshire Dales - the third walk of their summer programme. Setting off from Foxup,

the walkers passed Arn- cliffe, Litton and Halton Gill on the way. The journey there was amazing, and as a result of the heavy rainfall, water spurted out of the hillsides and the streams were foaming white. From Foxup Bridge, the

group explored Cosh Beck and Foxup Beck, the Sides dotted with primroses. The River Skirfare,

which runs through the valley of Littondale, is the third tr ib u ta ry of the Wharfe. It is formed at the con

fluence of these two streams and in full spate.

the water was a complete contrast to its usual pas

sage under pavement-like slabs.

The sounds from cas

cading water and the sight of springs bursting like mini geysers made the walk via Halton Gill and Lower Heselden memo rable, fortunately in improving weather condi tions.

neared Litton, there was time to look at Spittal Croft, the remains of a hospital, dating from monastic times when the whole area formed part of the vast Fountain’s Abbey Estates. To this day, sheep rear

ing is the most important part of the economy. In total, 37 flowers were

recorded including early purple orchids, oxslips and bird’s eye primrose. Several different types

of birds were also spotted - redshanks, oyster-catchers and a cormorant.

Police believed drivers were racing

TWO off-duty police officers driving in separate vehicles were overtaken by two cars travelling a t high speed as they drove out of Ciitheroe. And Blackburn magistrates

heard that both officers were of the view the cars were racing. Magistrates heard the two vehi

cles ignored double white lines as they overtook a line of three cars as they approached the blind brow of a hill. The court was told they would

have no way of seeing if there was anything coming over the hill and had there been oncoming traffic they would have had nowhere to go to avoid a serious collision. But defence solicitor Mr Andrew

Church-Taylor said his client denied that he and the other man

FIRE crews were called out to extinguish a blaze at a farm in Chaigley. Ten fire-fighters bat tled for three hours to bring the fire, which ripped through the farm in Chipping Road, with flames bursting through the

had been racing. "He accepts the facts put forward by the prosecu tion, but not the officer's opinion of what they were doing," said Mr Church-Taylor. Joe William Chew (20), of Pen-

dle Street East, Sabden, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving. He was ordered to do 120 hours’

community punishment and dis qualified from driving for 12 months. He will have to take an extended re-test before he can drive again. Miss Claire Fanning (prosecut

ing) said the police officers had fin ished their shift and were driving out of Ciitheroe about 10 p.m. when they were overtaken by two Vauxhall Corsas travelling in excess of 60 m.p.h. "They were just a few feet apart

and the officers said they were being driven flat out," said Miss Fanning. "One of the officers says that to his horror he saw a car com ing the opposite way. That vehicle had to brake hard and swerve to the nearside to avoid a collision.” Mr Church-Taylor said it had

never been accepted that the two cars were racing. "My client says he is not an idiot

and does not go out to put his own or anyone else's life in danger when he drives his car," said Mr Church- Taylor. "When he made the manoeuvre

he though it was safe to do so, but looking back accepts that wasn't the case." A second man has been charged

with dangerous driving and will appear in court at a later date.

Season ends with Cannes winner

A SUCCESSFUL first season of “big screen” shows drew to a close last weekend for the Ribble Film Club. Its season of 36 films, screened weekly at

Stage and Screen at the St Mary’s Centre, in Ciitheroe, ended on Sunday with “L’en- fant”, a winner at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. The next season begins after the summer

break, on September 3rd, with the excep tional film “The Lemming”. Meanwhile, talks are ongoing with Trinity Partner ships Ltd to ensure the survival of the Rib ble Film Club in the longer term. Club chairman Bruce Dowles has bat

tled bravely with the 35mm projector since the current season of screenings began last September. “I t ’s a beast, but one I respect,” said

Bruce. “From the first time I projected on September 4th last year i t has slowly purred to my touch and responds well. It was an awesome challenge, but everyone likes the set-up and the audiences have been marvellous tool” For more information about the Ribble

Film Club mid its activities, contact Bruce Dowles on 01200 426757.

Kylie’s gift helps out at Chernobyl fund-raiser Since the mid-1990s Ribble Valley res

idents have been opening their hearts and homes to children from the Belarussian city of Mogilev, an area that was hugely affected by the fall-out from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant dis aster. The annual trips to the Ribble Valley

give children, who stay with local fami lies, the chance to escape their home city’s contaminated atmosphere and

improve their immune systern. Just a month breathing “clean” air arid eating good food has been found to improve their health dramatically. The funds raised from the ball will help pay for this year’s visit by 18 children and two inter preters. Charity representatives thanked all

the businesses and individuals who spon sored the ball by donating prizes. Singer Kylie Minogue donated a signed DVD.
