FOLLOWING on from my last article about good quality English sparkling wine it is interest ing to read about a recent survey. From a survey of 105 people served with a glass

of Moet & Chandon and a glass of Ridgeview Merret Grosvenor 2001, 53% chose the English sparkling wines as their favourite. While a decade ago the notion of buying English wines was scoffed at, 42% of people surveyed last year admitted to either having bought or would buy English wines. In the run up to English Wine Week, which

runs until June 4th, I have scoured the shops to select some of the best for you to try. From

Booths, Clitheroe a stunning off dry sparkling wine CHAPEL DOWN BRUT at £11.99, for those who do not like very dry, often acidic sparklers this is perfect. Their CHAPEL DOWN ENGLISH ROSE 2005 at £6.99, is one of the best I have come across. A blend of Pinot Noir, Rondo and the aro matic Schonburger, gives a salmon pink wine with a backdrop of strawberry and redcurrant fruit with persistent finish. CHAPEL DOWN FLINT DRY NV at £6.49 is as it suggests a crisp, clean fruity wine. Aromas of green apples and citrus overtones make this reminiscent of a dry German Riesling. Other wines I have not tried include a

CHAPEL DOWN EPOCH 1, at £7.99 is an inter esting blend of red grapes, Rondo, Domfeldpr Pinot Noir.

While Tesco, Blackburn, had a couple of good

offerings, a Welsh wine TY-HAFORD 1999 at £5.07 is a blend of Madeline Angevine, Seyval Blanc and Huxelrebe. I t has strong aromas of elderflowers and the. muscat grape which has a very grapey nose, again not dissimilar to an off drv Germanic wine. The THREE CHOIRS 2000 £5.49, is made by the Wine Maker of the Year in 2004, Martin Fowke. This is a powerful white with

aromas of nuts leading to a zesty, citrus wine wth subtle fruit. D. Byrne, in Clitheroe, has a large selection to

choose from in the price range of £5.39 to £6 79 with a couple heading towards the £9 mark. Most are from the Curious Grape Company which has a range of single grape varieties seldom seen outside England. From their range I have enjoyed the ORTEGA, a Germanic cross bred grape for our cli mate delivering an off dry fruity wine. BACCHUS has strong distinctive flavours and some residual sugar left making it off dry. My favourite has to be SCHONEBURGER which more like an Alsace wine, racy and spicy, goes very well with Chinese

foods. This company is one of the “new wave” wines from the heart of Engird. So in English Wine Week, try something new

r e f r e ^ g and very, very British. To find the near est vineyard or for more info visit wrvw.english- wineproducers.com or for the best in British
