Talismanic skipper Stansfield to leave
By Adrian Capstick
PAUL Stansfield took centre stage at Clitheroe PC’s presen tation evening last Friday night as he took home the majority of the season’s awards. The skipper went home with
five gongs for his efforts over the campaign - before announcing work commitments mean he has played his last game for the club.. The event, which was held at
Mytton Fold golf club, was well attended as it also combined this year’s awards with a reunion o f the Clitheroe team that played in the FA Vase l^ a l at Wembley 10 years ago. The vast majority of the 1996
Wembley side attended, with manager Gary Butcher taking time out from a busy schedule to f ly up from Norwich fo r the event. Current committee member,
Steve Rush, who was club chair man for the Wembley trip back in 1996, welcomed all members of the squad, and Butcher and Dennis Underwood, who were the club’s joint managers at the time, presented this season’s awards to the current squad. Goalkeeper Peter Collinge

was recognised for a solid first season with the Blues as he won both the first team young player of the year and the first team’s most promising player. Craig Sargeson took home the

strike at home to Fleetwood early on in the seaison was a wor thy winner of the goal of the season accolade. That just left Stansfield to
clean up the rest of the awards as he deservedly walked away with the players’ player of the year, the golden boot award for top scorer, the supporters’ player of the year, as well as the club’s two supporters clubs also mak ing the first teaih captain their

player of the year. So, having swept the board
with awards, i t was with some shock when he then revealed he now has to move on, having taken on a new job out of the area. Stansfield is moving away
from Clitheroe and won’t be. able to commit to the club for next season. As much as he wishes to stay with the club, the travelling
involved makes it impossible to do so, but he leaves with the best wishes of everyone involved at Clitheroe. Preparations for next season
are well imder way with several new signings lined up, although negotiations with many of these players are still at an early stage 'The club will be having an
open day in the coming weeks and details will be announced once finalised.
