MOTOR MATTERS BRITISH insurers have started to fight

Initially, claimants are asked some general questions to establish normal stress levels before being asked specifically about their claim. Where irregular stress levels are detected the customer is phoned back and given the opportunity to withdraw the claim. Having initially introduced this system for


a trial period. Admiral has said that it intends to continue the trial indefinitely due to its suc­ cess. During the test period, 25% of claims were ivithdrawn. The company stressed that not all of these withdrawn claims were fraud­ ulent, as some were not taken up due to the vehicles being found. Other insurance companies have been


impressed with the results of this new tech­ nology, and are planning to introduce similar systems themselves.


A SURVEY by a leading tyre manufac- turer has highlighted the fact that


women could be putting themselves at risk because of their lack of knowledge and under­ standing about changing a wheel on their car. Only 8% of those surveyed felt comfortable with being able to change a wheel without assistance, while over half said that they would feel vulnerable if stranded by a flat tyre. More and more women are driving alone

This and a number of other factors has meant that the number of female drivers has continued to grow. Many womeii in breakdown situations, however, do the sensible thing and stay in their car, lock the doors and use their mobiles to call out one of the many roadside assistance serv­ ices like the AA, Green Flag or RAC.

r o n t up at Ferrari with a name like Leonardo Fioravan- ti and you are halfway there. Something tells me that a Fiora-


vanti is going to get a bit more play than a Higginbotham or a Schwein- steiger within the hallowed halls of Maranello. This Leonardo has some serious


form, too, working with Pininfarina on classic Ferrari designs such as the Dino, the Daytona, the Boxer and the 308GTB, still reckoned by many to be the most beautiful Ferrari ever built. His latest work is something rather


different, a 559-car limited-run ver­ sion of the 575, costing £199,000 and with a roof that almost defies belief. There is always a danger in think­


ing you have seen it all before. We have had folding and sliding soft tops and hard tops that concertina into place but tend to be too complex and heavy tor a proper sports car. Fioravanti has approached this


problem from a completely different angle, concentrating on offering an electrically operating hard top with, the simplicity of a soft top. Its execution is just astonishing


and, like all the best ideas, seems blindingly obvious when it is put into operation. Unlike most folding hard tops,

a carbon frame that pivots around a single point to flip the roof glass and rear screen glass into position. The driver drops a central handle to unlock it, prangs a switch and, with­ in 10 seconds, the whole affair has folded itself neatly on to the rear deck. This being a front-engined car,


there are not the problems with cool­ ing or loss of engine sounds you would get in a mid-engined model. The top just flips into place, clamp­ ing itself secure in seconds.


The downside is that you need to


undergo a few prerequisites for the car to allow you to drop the roof. This is not one of those operations that can be handled at 20 m.p.h. Manufactured in conjunction with


glass specialists Saint Gobain, the roof has another trick in its arsenal. The glass panel is electrochromatic, which means that a small current can transform it from virtually opaque to transparent. It does a very good job of giving the Superamerica a snug, enclosed,
