Welcome to the RibbleValley, and especially to Clitheroe Market.
Clitheroe is an historic market town, which has held a regular market since the twelfth
century.
The market is an important institution that has a considerable impact on the character of the town.
In I99S the market was moved to the adjacent site of the old cobbled bullring, which was the centrepiece of the old cattle market, and the site completely developed to provide a modern and attractive facility with suitable and convenient car parking.
The market redevelopment reflects the Council's commitment to the importance of the market and its role in the continuing success of Clitheroe as a shopping centre.

Lads and dads share fun time
AN innovative scheme to bring fathers and sons together has been hailed a huge success by staff a t a Clitheroe nursery. 'An enjoyable project called “Dads and
Lads”, which links literacy with sporting activities,, was introduced by staff at Rib- blesdale Nursery School in conjunction with Lancashire County Council’s Parental Involvement and Teaching Support Unit. The move was aimed at encouraging
dads to become more involved in their son’s education. •Run over a six-week period, the initiative
allowed children to take home a backpack consisting of either an item of'sporting equipment to practice a skill with their fathers or a book and poem card. One of the organisers, Mrs Michelle Wat
son, said the scheme had been enjoyed by both the dads and lads. She added: “Lots of fathers work away and therefore don’t have time to get involved with school runs and their son’s day-to-day activities. “The ‘Dads and Lads’ scheme ensured
that fathers spent at least 10 minutes a day with their sons. “Since the project has been introduced at
the nursery, we have had very positive feed back. Children loved the backpack idea and the special time with their dads.” At the end of the six week, a celebratory
party, organised jointly by the nursery staff and teaching adviser, Mr Bernard Poole, was enjoyed by everyone involved in the scheme. • Meanwhile, just to remind everyone
that the head-teacher at the nursery school is retiring next month after 22 years of service. Parents, pupils, staff, governors and
friends past: and present are invited to a party.ti|6id farewell to Mrs June Dewhurst on July ISth' at*’/ p.m. Anyone wishing to attend or contribute
to a retirement gift should contact Mrs J. Carter (Bursar), Ribblesdale Nursery School, Queens Road, Clitheroe, Lancs, BB7 lEL. All cheques should be made payable to Ribblesdale Nursery School.

Clitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, June 30th, 2005 17 Midsummer trip proves a hit with ramblers
DESPITE early overcast conditions, 23 Clitheroe ramblers began their Midsummer’s Day walk from the village of Withnell Fold. This was one of 150 walks held
nationally to celebrate Use Your Paths Week. After a stroll through the recently-
created nature reserve, the group travelled south along the Leeds and
Liverpool Canal to Wheelton and Heapey. Lunch was taken in bright sunshine at the cricket ground in the beautiful village of White Coppice. This was the birthplace of Henry Tate who made his money by discov ering how to turn sugar into cubes. Following a break, they turned
northwards through the 'Wheelton Plantation before reaching Brinscall.
At Snape’s Heights, above the vil
lage, they took in the views ofthe Fylde Coast, Yorkshire Dales and the West Lancashire Moors before arriving back at their start point in good spirits after their 8 mile walk led by Bryan Dobson. The next ramble is on Saturday,
July 2nd, from Ulverston. Meet at 7- 45 a.m. Tel: 01254 247791.
