THE old and the young got together under one roof when Clitheroe District Girl Guides celebrated the 60th anniver sary of the end of the Second World War. Wartime memorabilia, a street
party and plenty of old-fashioned activities at West Bradford Vil lage Hall guaranteed a day to remember for the 144 Girl Guides and their visitors, including war veterans, who attended the event. To mark the milestone occa
sion, the girls were encouraged to come dressed as evacuees or in the colours red, white and blue. They were organised into four

groups and each group had a chance to look at wartime memo rabilia, such as old pictures, uni forms and medals. Each group also had the oppor
tunity to chat to war veterans and people who had lived through that difficult time about
their memories of the conflict. The day of activity included a
street party with plenty of wartime food including oat cake, carrot cake, jam tarts and sand wiches. Thanks to the glorious weather,
children were able to take part in historical outdoor play activities, such as skipping, hula-hooping and had a barrel of laughs playing the 1940s-themed games. Organiser of the event and
Rainbow Guider, Mrs Michelle Smith, said: “Children enjoyed lis tening to wartime stories - both on the home front and overseas. “It was an enjoyable and educa
tional event and children were interested to learn about how peo ple coped through that difficult time. “I would like to thank everyone
who helped organised the event and people who came in to share their experiences of the Second World War with the children.” The fun-packed day was round
ed off when children sang wartime songs and had fun during a dance.

A UNIQUE new road safety course aims to reduce the number of road casualties among young and inexperienced drivers
. on the county's roads.- With one in three new drivers involved
in a crash in their first year of driving, Lancashire County Council's Road Safety Group is piloting the new course for learn ers and their accompanying drivers. It recognises that many learner drivers
will receive instruction from family or friends as well as formal lessons with a qualified driving instructor. The new course aims to ensure that both the learn er and their instructor get the most out of these extra, informal driving lessons. The Pre-Pass Support Scheme runs for
one theory class and a two-hour practical session. For a limited time it is free to take part.
Inexperience and peer pressure are the
major causes of casualties in the 17 to 24 age range. To assist in tackling this, the course aims to increase the amount of practice learners gain before taking their test and encouraging safe driving skills and habits.
I t has been proven that, with extra practice, the risk of an accident in the first two years of driving is greatly reduced. The Pre-Pass Support Scheme is being piloted by Lancashire County Council's Road Safety Group arid provides informa tion and advice for accompanying drivers^ For more information, ring Ann Finch

. the Ritz” to raise money'for research into children’s can cer.
Members of the Ribble Valley
Ladies’ Luncheon Club con verged on Foulridge, near Colne, for the event which raised £ 10,000. Held in the grounds of the
home of Mr and Mrs Philip Mclvor, the evening included “Rat Pack-style” live swing music, catering by Northcote Offsite and a fund-raising auc tion. In the seven years since its launch, the luncheon club has raised £350,000 for paediatric oncology. The club enjoys links with Manchester-based Profes sor Jill Birch, who conducts research into the reasons why children contract cancer. Over the past four decades research into the disease has moved a long way as many childhood cancers now have a 70 to 80%
cure rate. The club initially got its fund-raising ball rolling by holding just several lunches a year, but it has now expanded and several sub-committees are responsible for organising a wide-range of money making events, including trips to Fort- num and Mason, London. In coming months a hog roast
and country fair will help boost the coffers, as will a '60s night planned for the autumn. Monetary contributions also
come in through links with indi- vidual club members. Most recently the fund benefited from cash raised by runners taking part in the London Marathon, and in the New Year it hopes to receive sponsorship money raised by one individual who is planning to join the crew of a round-the-world yacht as it travels between Australia and Shanghai. Pictured are some of those who helped “put on the Ritz” to raise cash for charity. (T050605/6)

THE first Saturday in July will see upwards of 250 people sup porting the Rossendale and Pen- dle Mountain Rescue Team by taking part in the annual 46- mile “Rossendale Way in a Day” challenge walk, or the slightly less ambitious “Half Way in a Day”, at a mere 22 miles.
" Both walks, around the breath-taking head of the Rossendale valley, are set to be just as popular as in previous years and, again as last year, \vill follow a clockwise direction, allowing well-seasoned “half 1 wayers”. to experience the oppo
site end of the trail. The event takes place on Saturday, July 2nd, at the nominal entry fee of £12.50, which includes a dona tion to the rescue team. Prizes \vill be awarded for first
walkers back on both distances. As usual, the Team will be on hand all day providing food and drinks, followed by a slap-up meal on completion of the dis tance.
