No holes in this Polo’s plan
Jr I '^HE clue conies I right at the bot- -S- tom of the specifi
cation sheet. Although Volkswagen dubs its lat est Polo “new”, the fact that the cai-’s height and width remain unchanged suggests that this may be
mildly disingenuous. Rather than boing a wholly
new car, the latest Polo is actually a revised version of the old ca.'', albeit significant ly dLsguised. Given that the old Polo was a big favourite of ours, we are not complaining. In fact, improving the Polo
is a tough task. Yes, you could throw technological gimmick ry at it in a bid to instil even more of a big car feel, but the Volkswagen was already near the top of its class in terms of price and jacking this up still further would only alienate loyal customers. In fact, Volkswagen has
been rather restrained with this iteration of its hatchback, finessing the range of engines, and giving the car a face that apes that of the latest Passat. Indeed, this is set to be the
new “family face” of Volkswa gen, with a deep grille forming the point of a V-shape, which then continues up through the bonnet to'the base of the

windscreen pillars. The reshaped headlights
lose the cute look of the old Polo in favour of something wielding a little more gravi- tas, the circular headlamp cutting into the bumper to give a resolutely contempo rary look. This front end adds anoth
er 19mm to the length of the Polo, so if the garage is already a tight squeeze, you may need to consider some extension work. The rear end has also come
in for a little cosmetic surgery. The glass emulates the front- end’s V-shaped theme, while the rear lights again reprise the design from the front, with large circular elements. The interior has been fresh
ened without too much change. A revised range of steering wheel designs is the most obvious change, although there are some updated trims for the seats and the instrument graphics are new. . Otherwise there is little dif
ference. Rear seat passengers still get the same amount of head room and the view out of the car from the driver’s seat
is identical to the outgoing model. One obvious weak point in
the old Polo line up was the inclusion of the archaic 1.9- litre 64 b.h.p. SDl diesel engine. We regularly advised buyers to steer well clear of this budget unit, a power plant that could be wheeled out to show how far modern diesels had come. Wheezy, harsh but frustratingly gut less, this engine had little to recommend it and Volkswa gen has thankfully wielded the axe, replacing it with a far superior 70 b.h.p. 1.4-litre TDI unit. The old 75 b.h.p. 1.4-litre
'PDI has been treated to a sprucing and is now good for 80 b.h.p., creating a pair of three-cylinder TDI diesel options. The 1.9-litre TDI turbo-diesels that proved so popular in the outgoing model are carried over. Customers get the choice of either 100 or 130 b.h.p. power outputs and, like both the 1.4-litre diesel, they are fully Euro4 compli ant. If you would prefer a
petrol-powered engine, Volk swagen offers 55 and 64 b.h.p. 1.2-litre units, plus 75,86 and 100 b.h.p. versions of the 1.4- litre power plant, the 86 b.h.p. iteration being powered by Volkswagen’s FSI system.
'Phis unit borrows features from diesel engines, such as common rail injection and utilises a single piston high- pressiue fuel pump. Where FSI engines really
impress is in their behaviour under part throttle loads. Whereiis before, part throttle meant just that, partially strangulating the output by closing a butterfly valve, the FSI system can be run with the throttles in a more effi cient open position by creat ing a rich fuel mix directly next to the spark plug and a leaner mix in other parts of the combustion chamber. This is not only more effi
cient in terms of how much fuel enters the chamber in the first place, but it also means that less energy is wasted as heat to the cylinder block. In effect a blanket of am shields the ignited fuel from the walls of the cylinder. When the throttle is
pressed wide open, the engine reverts to a more conventional “homogenous” method of fill ing the combustion chamber with fuel and air. The “tum ble” effect and the synchroni sation of air and fuel along with the careful metering of the high-pressure injection system all combine to offer more power and a cleaner engine. When you are

dawdling you get great econo my and when you want to drop the hammer you have got more power. The finish is certainly as
slick as anything in the £20,000 bracket. Invisible laser welding makes the roof, rear wing and sills look all of a piece and also contributes to Volkswagen’s claim that the Polo has,better structural rigidity than any car in its class, although as a rather outsized supermini one hesi tates to identify exactly which class that is.
The key themes behind the
Polo are the worthy (but slightly dull) avenues of safe ty and environmental friend liness. Both are top notch, all Polos being fitted with anti lock brakes with electronic braking assistance, twin front and side airbags, ISOFIX child seat mountings and a passenger airbag that can be deactivated when a child seat is fitted. With prices kicking off at
£7,495, Wkswagen has resis ted the temptation to ramp the Polo’s prices up signifi
cantly. Even cars like the impressive 1.4 Sport FSI wll not demand much ovei £12,000 from their prospec tive purchasers. Yes, you can buy cheaper,
but the Polo feels worth every permy. Whether you view the Polo’s small premium as money well spent depends on your personal perspective on Volkswagen Group products. It you think this is a fleec
ing, buy a SEAT or Skoda. Personally, I would be happy paying the small premium foi a finish like this. -
