hunkered down stance, courtesy of suspension that rides 25mm lower than other models. Unique 15in, alloy wheels, a mesh grille and a chrome tailpipe finisher distin guish the Sport from the outside and the interior benefits from two- tone leather trim with a leather- trimmed steering wheel and gear knob. . Stainless steel door sill kick plates and brushed aluminium detailing for the instruments and air vents also serve to lift the cabin. This is on top of more familiar Kalos fare, such as anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribu tion, twin front and side airbags, three-point belts on all five seats ■ and ISOFIX anchorage points for a child seat in the back. steering, central locking with alarm, cup holders front and rear, an auxiliary power outlet in the back and a tilt adjustable steering column.
Insurance is a very reasonable
Group 6A and Chevrolet’s leading peace of mind package features a three-year/60,000 mile free servic ing and warranty deal, and there is even three years worth of AA Total roadside assistance as part of the deal. That sort of package is tough to
beat at any price, but weighing in at under £10,000 it suddenly makes rivals look decidedly pricy. Naming a car after the Greek
word for beautiful may be tempt ing fate a little, but Chevrolet’s Kalos looks to be able to carry it off.
Part of the latest generation of
superminis that attempt to cram as many MPV-style ideas as pos sible into their truncated dimen sions, the Kalos is notably better looking than many previous attempts at this genre. Small won der, as it was styled by Giugiaro in Turin, a design house of no little repute. As you would expect, this three-
door version is, of course, a car of very compact dimensions (length/ width/height 3880/1670/1495 mm), yet like the more family friendly five-door versions, it boasts one of the longest wheel bases (2480mm) in the supermini class.
]That means an interior that is
a great deal more spacious than you might expect. The front head- room (955mm) is class-leading, as is rear leg room (900mm). For rear seat passengers to enter and leave the vehicle, the front passenger seat can be folded forward with only one hand before clicking back into its initial position. Storage space inside is pretty
good. Drink cans and cups are held in place in fold-out cuphold- ers on the centre console or in recesses at the end of the central transmission tunnel. To improve the driver’s view,
the top of the rear head restraints have been flattened, while the back of the front head rests are fit ted with hooks to keep small shop ping bags securely in place.
