Walmsley fires hat-trick W o lv e s ’ h om e ru le Donald as Ciitheroe extend lead

Springfields.................2 Clitheroe..................... 3 DESPITE turning in their worst performance of the season at Preston's Sports Arena, Ciitheroe came away with all the p ^ n ts thanks to a hat- trick from Rachel Walms- ley. The locals went ahead

through Walmsley follow ing a short corner, but Springfields pressured Ciitheroe throughout the half and got a deserved equaliser just before half time. Clitheroe's coach tried

to spur her side into play ing their normal game, and they did marginally improve in the second half, but they had star pfiSijrer Walmsley to thank as it was her form and sec ond hat-trick of the sea son that saw Ciitheroe through. Springfields gave a very determined display arid

scored their second with minutes left to play, which led to a very anxious few minutes for the locals’ defence. This win puts Ciitheroe

four points clear at the head of the table. Ciitheroe 2nds............2 Scholars.......................0 CLITHEROE went into this game looking for their f irs t win of the season, and put in their best per formance to date. The midfield play was

competitive and flowing, and the locals’ first goal came via a penalty scored by Gay Preston. The second goal of the

game came from Bronte Box, and as Clitheroe played as a team, they looked comfortable throughout the game and could have scored more if it had not for the heroics of Scholars’ goalkeeper. By contrast, Clitheroe's keeper did not have a save

debut, but coach ' says farewell

IT was an emotional night in Wales on Saturday as Clitheroe Dolphins debuted in the Speedo Second Division, and also said goodbye to Head Coach Jonathan Preston. The team took to the new challenge,

eventually finishing fourth in a tight six way encounter. "There were individual wins for

Thomas Carter in the 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle, Elliot Holden in the 50m breaststroke and Mark Jaggs in the i^9m breaststroke. Preston, Ribble Valley Coach of the

Year for the last two years, has secured a top coaching jobs elsewhere in the county.

i-A Jonathan Preston Since his appointment at Clitheroe, he

has seen his charges produce year on year improvements, including two pro motions, and leaves the club in good health. Commenting on the departure, chair

man Mick Jones said: ’’Success gets you noticed. We are all sad to see Jon go, but he has earned the opportunity to coach full time at a new £4.5 million pool with an elite group of swimmers, where the next stop might be the Olympics. “ I t was an offer he couldn’t turn

down. We wish him well, we will stay in touch and will follow his progress close ly.”

Pumas don’t get rub of green in frustrating league cup exit

Whalley Pumas V16s . .1 Lammack Juniors-----3 WHALLEY Pumas Under 16s found them selves undeservedly dumped out of the league ctf-p in their second 3-1 defeat of the season at the hands of Lammack Juniors. In blustery conditions,

the first half was one of few chances, but Lam mack were gifted the lead when the Pumas failed to deal properly with a cor- and an own goal

resulted from an unfortu nate ricochet off a Whal ley defender. After the interval, the

locals upped the pace and began to dominate. Lone striker Sam Tow-

nend was totally unplayable when on the ball, and was soon clearly brought down in the area when about to strike, but no penalty was awarded. 'This injustice was com

pounded minutes later when a defensive mix up saw the ball trickle over the line to make it 2-0 to Lammack. To their credit, Whalley

continued to press and were duly rewarded when Simon Cowgill fired in a 25-yard free kick. Lam mack were rattled and

soon gave another free kick away just outside the box. A Lammack defender’s

hand blatantly stopped CowgilTs goal-bound shot and the Pumas were again astounded not to be awarded a penalty. With time running out,

Lammack sneaked an undeserved third goal to kill the match and deny Whalley at least extra time. Once again Declan Fitzhenry was outstand ing, and a runaway man- of-the-match in a fine team performance th a t simply deserved better then they got.

to make in the second half, and the defence never looked in danger of being beaten. This win moves the

locals up to ninth place, but level on points with fifth place. Clitheroe Hockey Club

training is on as usual from 8-9 p.m. on the all weather pitch behind Hicks Gym on Chatburn Road. There is no game this Saturday for either team, but both sides are back in action the follow ing week. Anyone interested in

THESE two teams pro Wolves all three points. duced an excellent game of football which was a superb advertisement for the qual ity of local football in the Warburtons League.

Over the past three sea

sons the matches between these two sides have always been competitive and close ly fought, and this one was no exception. Throughout the game,

both sides tried to play con structive football and many chances were creat ed.

The only disappoint

ment the Wolves may have is that they allowed a two- goal lead to slip away. Two goals from

Haworth, who on both occasions was in the right place at the right time to fire the ball home, gave the locals the lead. To their credit though,

level in the second half, the match could have gone either way, and but for an outstanding save from each keeper and some sound tackling from man-of-the- match, Hopkins, there may have been a winner. A draw, however, was a

fair result in the end. Chipping Juniors........1 Wolves Under 11s ........S

once again dominant in midfield, while Kitchen, James Cronin, George Hutchinson and Hack Haslam kept the Chipping forwards at bay throughout the game. The Wolves are now

joint top with 12 points from their five games, although their nearest rival Real FC have a game in hand. Haslingden Juniors . . .2 Wolves Under 10s ........3 WOLVES returned to Mn- ning ways on their travels this weekend with a wel comed victory over Haslingden Juniors. Man-of-the-match Elliot

Kay opened the scoring for Wolves mid-way through the first half in a period of play dominated by the visi tors, but stubborn defend ing by Haslingden prevent ed the lead from being stretched, and a moment’s lapse in concentration by the Wolves back line led to the home team equalising just before half-time. Wolves opened the sec

Haslingden managed to pull one back, and then proceeded to bombard the Wolves defence, who were relieved when the final whistle blew. This result leaves Wolves

sitting third in the North Valley League table, as they look forward to visit ing Barnoldswick Barons this Sunday.

Brave fightback in vain

Roefield Leisure Ulls .2 Wilpshire Wanderers .3 ROEFIELD put together a fine second half per formance, having been stunned in the first few seconds of the game against their Ribble Val ley rivals, and 3-0 down at half-time. Wilpshire netted almost

the Wilpshire attack. Unfortunately, Wilp
