'Pals' return to their own county

A POWERFUL First World War drama, “The Accrington Pals” , will be staged at the Dukes, in Lancaster, from October 27th to November 19th. It will be the first time that

Peter Whelan’s play has been per formed professionally in the coun ty in which it is set. Ian Hastings, artistic director of

the Dukes, said: “We’re delighted to be producing this wonderful play which tells such an important story about the county we serve. “ Essentially a love story, it explores how people and relation

ships change in times of great pressure. It is an extraordinary tribute to the strength and resilience of Lancashire folk and to the value of community and com radeship.” The play is set in Accrington' in

1914. 'The life of the small town is turned upside down when more than 1,000 of its men proudly enlist to fight in the Great War, leaving the women - wives, moth ers, daughters and lovers - to keep themselves and the spirit of the to'wn alive. Laced with humour and

humanity, “The Accrington Pals” focuses on a group of female friends including May, a strong- willed vegetable stallholder and the naive, but generous-hearted Eva, both fighting their own bat tles as they try to adjust to life without the men they love. This production will be directed

by Ian Hastings, who most recent ly directed the Dukes’ production of “Under Milk Wood”. Seven cast members from that

acclaimed production have remained to perform in “ The Accrington Pals” , namely Simon

Armstrong, Erica Erian, Jessica Lloyd, Sue Hastie, Rhiannon Oliver, Richard Heap and Simon Watts. They are joined on stage by

Guy Hargreaves, Jane Allen, Elianne Bym and Des O’Malley. “The Accrington Pals” was first

performed by the Royal Shake speare Company in 1981. For more details of perform

Method 1. Place Cumberland sausages in a

roasting tin and cook in preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until golden and cooked through. During the last 10 minutes add mini

Yorkshires to oven and cook according to pack instructions. 2. Peel potatoes and cut into chunks.

Place into a pan, cover with water and boil for about 15 minutes until soft.’ During the last 8-10 minutes add the

savoy cabbage, finely.shredded. Drain and mash with a splash of milk and a knob of butter. Stir through spring onions, finely

chopped. The traditional way to eat is to make

a well in the mash and place a knob of butter inside and allow to melt!

To make the gravy: Heat oil and cook

the onion for 5-10 minutes until lightly golden and soft. Stir in flour then gradually stir in the

stock (or you can cheat and use gravy granules!). Add the fresh thyme leaves, bring to

boil and allow to simmer and thicken for 5 minutes.

Serve the sausages with the colcan
