FRODO, Sam, Merry and Pip pin - possibly not the normal hairy-footed villagers you’re likely to meet. However, it is a well known fact th a t Tolkien himself had a close relation ship with the Ribble Valley, creating snatches of his fanta sy while surrounded by the peace of the Lancashire coun tryside. Unfortunately the exact details
of this connection and of the great man’s influences are not common knowledge. Even while echoes of Middle Earth may be lurking around the comer. Tolkien’s natural love of the
Hurst Green soon collides with the River Ribble. Enthusiasts follow the meandering bends until the Calder is reached and the invasion of Tolkien’s world, in my opinion, tmly begins. During the 1950s the Hacking
countryside may have fuelled his wishes to travel to the Valley, but the major reason for his repeated travel from Oxford was his son, John. John was studying for priesthood at St Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst. The spectacular scenery surrounding Tolkien on his stays at “New Lodge” encour aged him to discover some of his well trodden walks. Today his favourite is known as
“Tolkien’s Trail” and bears mirac ulous resemblances to features of his epic “The Lord of the Rings”. This is why the Valley is believed by some to be a parallel of “The Shire”. Delving back into the Valley 50
years ago, we can visualise Hurst Green and the land surrounding the tower and turrets of Stony hurst College through the eyes that created Hobbiton. “Tolkien’s Trail” beginning at
Ferry carried villagers over the water. Is this the basis for Buckle- by Ferry and the Hobbits first flight from the Nasgul? Perhaps Tolkien enjoyed observing passen gers bob over the waters of his Brandywine River, disguised as the Hodden And across the bank Brandy Hall - home of the Brandybuck Hobbit family, tak ing the place of Hacking Hall in his mind. As locals know, behind Hacking
Hall stands the foreboding Milton Wood, Tolkien’s beginning of the old forest. Tracking the flow of the Hodder, another reminder of “The Shire” appears. Casually known as “Devil’s Bridge”, Lower Hodder Bridge crosses the river just as Brandywine Bridge arches over the Brandywine, on the banks of which Pippin and Merry are engulfed by a Willow tree. The hobbits saviour is Tom
Bombadil, who takes the troops back to his home for a short respite. This may be Tolkien’s introduction of his own refuge “New Lodge”, giving him the time and space to write. Some may believe Tolkien’s
world only features in books and films. However, I hope that the factual guise may be lifted for any body who wishes to find a little piece of Middle Earth.

The now complete brasserie/coffee shop has been incorporated mto the eight-bedroom hotel, with a Hcensed bar and a continental menu. With a relaxed atmosphere, the brasserie is definitely the place to be.
Customers can choose from a varied menu frompaninis to light bites and each dish can be suitably complemented with a glass of wine or two. Or if you prefer to enjoy the ambience with a cappuccino and a pastry, a little escapism from the hustle and bustle is the order of the day.
This imposing school house has been transformed by the present owners, Ged and Debbie Wright.
The couple who took over the hotel nearly two years ago are familiar faces in the Ribble Valley. They were the previous owners of Pempenhuis Kofrie shop, in Whalley - known locally as The DoU's House coffee snop.
There they built up an invaluable reputation and an extensive loyal customer base - something the pair are keen to establish in their new venture.
Complete with ample free parking and disabled access, the brasserie is located in the idem spot for shoppers en-route to busy towns, a lazy limch after a pleasant drive through the beautiful Ribble Valley or a busmess lunch with colleagues.
