Debt man gave in to temptation, court told

A CLITHEROE man who had the bailiffs knocking on his door gave in to temptation when a credit card, complete with pin number, dropped through his letter box. Blackburn magistrates heard that

Stephen Thomas Woodward (31) drew near ly £3,500 on the card in two weeks. The offences only came to light when the

man named on the card came back from working abroad and was contacted by the card issuer. Woodward, of , Windsor Avenue, pleaded

guilty to theft of the card and six thefts from Barclaycard and asked for six similar offences to be taken into consideration. Miss Judith Balderstone (prosecuting)

Twins boost charity

SIX-YEAR-OLD twins Susanne and Christopher Hall have raised £600 for the MS Society. The intrepid twins put their best feet for

ward and walked the 105-mile Robin Hood Way. Mr Doug Ratcliffe, who is the twins’

grandfather and the secretary of the Burn ley and Pendle branch of the MS Society, said that the youngsters secured sponsorship through friends and family as well as at Read Primary School and St John’s Church in the village. “The twins’ achievement is fantastic. The

school has been very supportive indeed and the church has also helped,” he said. They handed over the cheque to Mr Rat

cliffe and group chairman Mr Ken Johnson. The society helps people with multiple

sclerosis and the Burnley and Pendle branch has more than 85 members. It is staffed by volunteers and provides therapies such as reflexology and physiotherapy.

\ PoO-^.

said the platinum card and pin number had been sent to Woodward's home address, which had previously been the home of a Mr Bradshaw. Various amounts were withdrawn from

machines and in total £3,484 was taken. "Mr Bradshaw was sent correspondence

by the bank about the withdrawals, but he was out of the country until September 26th," said Miss Balderstone. "When the matter was reported to the police, the card and the pin number were found at the defen dant's address." Miss Sian Hall (defending) said Wood

ward was a man of previous good character who worked as a machine driver and part- time as a doorman. "This is his first appear

ance before any court and he is quite simply petrified," said Miss Hall. She said financial problems were behind

the offences. "There were various debts, the bailiffs had been round and things had got out of hand," said Miss Hall. "The credit card arrived and he foolishly saw this as an opportunity to pay off his debts." Miss Hall said Woodward and his girl

friend had set up home in Windsor Avenue and were due to marry next year. "That is not going to happen and the

money they would have saved will be used to pay off the debt," said Miss Hall. "It has also affected his relationship with his girlfriend. He has had to move out of the address and she has remained."
