Children greet charity walkers

PUPILS from a Ribble Valley pri mary school showed their support for two impressive charity walkers. Mr Steve Dayman and Mr Steve

Fear stopped at Gisburn school dur ing their colossal 540-mile trek. Greeted with balloons and cheers

from the children, the pair took time out of their 26-day hike to talk to pupils about the sponsored event. Walking in aid of Meningitis UK,

the men are hoping to raise £100,000 tor the national charity during their walk from Londonderry, in Northern Ireland to Great Ormond Street Hospital, in London. Supported by members of the

Clitheroe Round Table, who donat ed £100, the long-distance walk is Mr Dayman’s 18th, since losing his 14-month old son to meningitis 23 years ago. Anyone wishing to spon sor the pair can call Emily Knight, the fund-raising officer tor Meningi tis UK, on 0117 3737373. Our picture shows Mr Steve Day

men and Mr Steve Fear being greet ed by pupils and Ribble Valley Mayor, Coun. Mary Robinson at the Gisbum school. (B121005/1)

Bogus charity collector was on bail

A BOGUS charity collector from Colne was caught in Clitheroe town centre claiming to be collecting for children’s charities. Blackburn magistrates heard

that at the time of the offence, Norman Glynn Jones (55) was on bail to magistrates in Burn ley and Conway, in North Wales, for similar offences. Jones, of Earl Street, Colne,

pleaded guilty to two charges of attempting to obtain property by deception and was remanded in custody to appear at Burnley Magistrates’ Court on Novem ber 9th. Phillip Leach (defending) said

his client would be admitting all the offences outstanding against him. Judith Balderstone (prosecut ing) said police were alerted by

members of the public who were suspicious of a man going into pubs and shops asking for chari ty donations. A description was circulated

and a t 4 p.m. Jones was seen leaving the Brown Cow. When challenged by the officers he pro duced an A4 sheet of paper with his photograph taped to it. He had a plastic container with £60 in small change in it.

R o u n d Table ‘s tr ik e ’ a win

in 1 s t round MEMBERS of Clitheroe Round Table beat a team from Greater Manchester in the first round of their recent national Ten-Pin Bowling competition. Local members, who are

the area champions, repre sented Ribble and Lune and travelled to the MegaBowl a t Pilsworth, near Bury, for the compe tition. Area chairmen also

attended, competing in their own challenge match. As play began, Ribble and Lune started to pull away and scores of 159 and 146 by Gibson and Harrison ensured that the home side opened up an 80 point lead a t the half-way stage. Two str ike s in quick

succession by the away teams’ capta in and an indifferent opening by the halfway leaders, led to a few concerned glances between the players. Richard Pallister and

then M a r tin Gibson, again, picked up the reins and with scores of 135 and 132 respectively, were able to cross the winning line with something to spare. The final aggregate

score was 572 to 463. In the challenge match

for the chairmen, Peter Caley, th e Ribble and Lune chairman lost to his opposing number by 187 to 227. Overall, it was an enjoyable evening, helped by the result. The second round draw is eagerly awaited.

Open house From 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. tomorrow, Sat urday and on Friday, October 28th and Saturday the 29th there will be "Open House" at 26 Wood lands Park, Whalley, to raise money for the Tear Fund.
