IN 1983 the wearing of seat-belts became compulsory in this country.
The RAC Foundation has said that 80% of
deaths of front seat occupants could be avoided if those in the back used their belts. Seat-belt wearing has generally increased over the last 20 years, with most drivers and passengers accepting that belting-up makes sense and saves lives. There is, however, an alarming difference
between the percentage of drivers that use their belts regularly -
in excess of 90% com
pared to rear seat passengers at only 56%. The foundation compiled a dossier of the excuses given by drivers and passengers for not wearing seat-belts. Their feeble excuses make alarming reading. Among the worst were:
• I’m only going around the corner. • I’m a good driver and don’t need one. • They are uncomfortable because I am

deathly dull but just occa sionally a nugget of informa tion brings everything else to a standstill. Somewhat staggeringly,

such a thing happened when considering the Saab 9-3 Sportwagon’s boot floor han dle. I had to read the press release again just to make sure I’d got it right. “The Sportwagon comes with a Twin Floor Storage facility. By pulling a chrome, air craft-shaped handle, the main boot floor can be fold ed and relocated for access to a recessed sub-floor.” This instantly gave rise to
A DIVORCE can be a tricky time for both parties - and so it proved to be for Jason Somerville and his soon-to-be ex-
wife from Broken Hill, Australia. Jason’s wife was insisting that she should receive half of everything when it came to dividing up their possessions. Jason, being a fair-minded per son, agreed and cut their car in half with a blowtorch.
the intriguing question of just what shape is an air craft? Was this boot floor handle a delicate chromed Vickers Vimy biplane that popped up or could it be a sleek Saab Gripen? The straight wings and chunky stub ordnance hardpoints of a Northrop A-IO Tank- buster would be a whole lot easier to grasp. Unfortunate ly, the truth was a little more prosaic and aircraft- style would probably have

The Sportwagon: Bring load, Swede chariot...
been somewhat nearer the mark. That’s about all that does give serious cause for disappointment about the 9- 3 Sportwagon. Following on from the Sport Saloon and Convertible models, the Wagon is one of the best looking cars in its class, the tight overhangs and chunky proportioning giving it a real presence. With a backlash forming
against the dowdy driving characteristics of many 4x4 and MPV-style vehicles.
premium mid-sized estates have seen an increase in pop ularity in recent years and Saab hopes to capitalise upon a market that demo graphics suggest is often younger and more affluent than the traditional saloon and hatchback sectors. Unlike many vehicles that
campaign in this class, the Saab offers some serious car rying capacity. There’s 419 litres available with the rear seats in place and a whop ping 1,273 litres of space
available with the seats fold ed down. The first Saab model to offer zero lift over both axles, the 9-3 Sport- Wagon isn’ t just a pretty shape. Although some may question the fitment of the integrated rooftop spoiler, it does serve a function, pre venting unwelcome vortices at the back of the car and helping high-speed stability. Four petrol engines and
three diesels are offered with the 9-3 Sportwagon, kicking off with a 122 b.h.p. 1.8-
litre, then progressing to a 150 b.h.p. I.8t unit, moving on to an all-aluminium 175 b.h.p. 2.0t engine, with an upper case 2.0T denoting the 210 b.h.p. version. The 1.9-litre TiD common rail diesel engines offered in 120 or I50b.h.p. form are both Euro 4-compliant and both are mated to six-speed man ual gearboxes. The big buzz is the addition of a 250 b.h.p. turbo-charged 2.8-litre V6 petrol engine which should really fly.
