26 Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, March 17th, 2005 Brownies hope to trade fairly

FINDING out about “Fairtrade” goods was the task set for Gis- bum’s 1st St Mary Brownies. Around 20 members of the busy

troop, accompanied by their lead ers, enjoyed a visit to Bamoldswick’s Co-operative store to learn all about Fairtrade prod ucts. As their name suggests, they are goods which are traded fairly, ensuring a good price for the farm ers and growers who produce them, often in the Third World. Although they may cost a little

more, consumers know exactly where the quality products come from and that their money will not line the pockets of “middle men” while the producers struggle to survive. The Bamoldswick store was the

first designated Fairtrade shop in Pendle, which in turn became the

country’s first “Fairtrade Bor ough” due to the number of local outlets selling Fairtrade goods. The Brownies enjoyed learning

about the many products, includ ing how and where they are pro duced. They were also able to try some delicious Fairtrade chocolate and orange juice. Their visit was timed to coin

cide with national Fairtrade Fort night. Catering for girls aged seven to

11, the thriving 1st St Mary Brownies is currently full, but anyone wanting more information about the group, or to go on the waiting list, can contact Tawny Owl Heather Adamson on 01282 812980. Pictured are the Brownies with

BURNLEY Choir and Orchestra will bid farewell to its conductor on Sun day evening at a perfor mance of Beethoven’s mas terpiece “Missa Solemnis” at the Mechanics Theatre. Philip Mackenzie is

leaving the area to further his career in London and choir chairman John David said: “We are sad to lose such a talented and

enthusiastic director, but understand he wants to develop the work he has already established.” The “Missa Solemnis” is

a work full of variety and features a violin solo which will be played by orchestra leader Jem Bradley. The concert starts at 7-
