The life arid times of Diana Lister, youngest daughter of Lord Rib- blesdale of Gisburne Park, who was married three times, losing her first two husbands tragi cally, fascinated the audi ence at last Thursday's meeting. After a happy childhood with her two brothers and two sisters, she married a soldier, but he was killed in Soma liland after only 17 months of marriage.

Her second marriage to A. Coppell, a Paris industri alist, was also short-lived as he was killed in a car accident in 1919. She and her third husband, the Earl of Westmorland, lived a t Lyegrove in Gloucester and had three children.

The Earl was invalided out of the Navy in the 1940s and died in 1948. Diana continued at Lyegrove, supported in later years by her family until her death in 1960, aged 90.

Parish Council At tonight's Parish Coun cil meeting, the Best Kept Village Competi tion, an update on the bus station refurbish ment and yellow lines on Accrington Road are among subjects for dis cussion. The meeting begins at 7-30 p.m. in the Methodist School.

ATKINSON Kathle en

A FUN-FILLED day was enjoyed by children at Chatburn Pri mary School when they celebrated World Book Day and cooked up a healthy treat for lunch. More than 100 youngsters let their literary imagination run wild when they attended school dressed as characters from their

favourite books. The worldwide celebration was an opportunity to celebrate chil dren’s literature at its best and inspire the pupils to explore the

wonderful world of books. During the day, the youngsters had a chance to chat to well-

known publisher Diane Rawsthorn and received a World Book Day £1 token, which could be exchanged for a brand new book of their choice. The day also included children from Years 3, 4 and 5 preparing

vegetables for a salad to be served to fellow pupils at lunch. According to Years 5 and 6 teacher Mrs Jennifer Skellam, the

venture was designed to ensure children eat more healthily. She commented: “A food technology teacher talked about ways

children can improve their eating habits by eating healthily. This inspired them to cook up a real treat at lunch consisting of a healthy salad and coleslaw, which everyone seemed to enjoy.” The day concluded with prizes awarded to the best dressed

pupils. Our picture shows schoolchildren showing off their weird and

wonderful costumes, (s) Club’s new lease of life

A NEW lease of life has been given to Whalley Cricket Club thanks to a three-year sponsor ship deal by officials a t The Three Fishes in Mitton. Budding Ian Bothams and

Darren Goughs will now able to nurture their talent in style at the over 125-year-old club, situ ated at Station Road, Whalley. The club is renowned for stag

ing the first Roses Match in 1867, and has embarked on the road to achieving Sport Eng land’s Clubmark status. The sponsorship deal means

exciting plans are afoot to improve and develop Whalley Cricket Club over the coming seasons. Commenting on the initiative,

The service was conducted by Richard Turner with Greg Morris, organist, Alison Ppyle soloist and EileeiPHemingway read-

managing director of The Three Fishes, Mr Craig Bancroft, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to assist in raising the profile of Whalley Cricket Club by offering financial sup port, helping with fund-raising events and encouraging new members of all ages to join such an enthusiastic club. “We very much looking for

ward to a tremendous season for Whalley and hope that our sup

port will benefit both the club, its members and the community of Whalley as a whole.” Mr David Westwood, chair

man of Whalley Cricket Club, feels the sponsorship deal will help the club go from strength to strength. He commented: “This is a

major step forward for the club. “We are extremely lucky to

have found a locally based spon sor whose ambitions mirror ours - namely the development of local facilities for the communi ty.

“I look forward to working

with the The Three Fishes over the next three years to every one’s mutual benefit.” This season, the club is plan

ning to run junior teams at four age groups - Under-11, Under- 13, Under-15 and, for the first time, Under-18. Mr Westwood added the sub
