motorists are turning to their chosen spiritual leader in their cars during times of stress. From a recent survey, it would appear that the car is replacing the church as the place to pray. Over 73% admitted to having the odd

This sounds all well and good, but when the survey dug a little deeper it discovered that the reasons given for praj'er were a little on the selfish side. The most common prayers were: 0 "Please get me out of this jam." 9 "Please make sure that the camera didn't

have any film." 9 Prayers for specific things to happen, i.e.

them to return it. It was not because he des perately wanted his car back. No, it was that the stolen car contained his prize procession of pictures of his best catches.

h e Mercedes B-Class is designed to pro vide practical family transport. And, like other vehicles of this ilk, it is well suited

to diesel power. Here we examine the range-topping diesel in

the B-Class range, the B200 GDI. Available sole ly in plush SE trim at prices from £21,575, the B200 GDI goes up against some accomplished vehicles, but aims to carve a niche out for itself with its own particular set of qualities. The engine is the three-pointed star’s 2.0-litre

four-cylinder 16-valve common-rail injection unit that is offered with a six-speed manual gearbox or the Autotronic self-shifting option. The claimed average economy of 50.4 m.p.g.

will raise a fair few eyebrows, given the B-Glass’s ample dimensions, and a 0-62 m.p.h. acceleration effort of 9.6 seconds is also to be commended. Top speed is 124 m.p.h. and that should be

plenty while CO2 emissions of 146g/km place the B200 GDI in a lower tax bracket than the entry- level petrol model. The B-Glass handles neatly enough, with less

® WHEN a customer took her dog on a

body roll than you may expect for such a high sided vehicle, although the ride is on the firm side. The electro-mechanical power steering feels a little odd at first, but trust it and it will direct the car’s nose accurately. The diesel engine in the B200 GDI is not the

most refined, but performance is more than ade quate. The ESP stability control system can feel a little over-zealous for real press-on driving, but otherwise it is fairly vice free. Sit in the back of the B200 GDI, stretch your

'

legs out and you will appreciate that it is compa rable with the amount of room in the back of an S-GIass limousine. Despite this, the B-CIass breaks the tape at only 4,270mm long. Mercedes would have us refer to its B-Glass as

a Gompact Sports Tourer, but there is not much that is sporty about it and so the relaxed nature of the GDI diesel engine suits the car well. The B200 GDI performs and handles compe

tently enough, but its biggest strengths are iti interior packaging and the Mercedes-Benz builc quality, which seems to have returned to form ir this instance. The 2.0-litre GDI power plant does look expen

sive in the context of the wider market, but everybody knows you pay a premium for tht three-pointed star and the excellent fuel economj will at least help you recoup some of your outlay
