Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) 22 Clitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, October 13th, 2005 Landmarks to

be demolished TWO major landmarks which have dominated the landscape in part of the Ribble Valley will be gone forever this weekend. The towering 140 ft high chimney on

the site of the former Mullards plant in Simonstone is to be blown up, along with the nearby batch house which stands at 100 ft high. Bolton-based demolition contractors

Walter Forshaw are to carry out the demolition with a controlled explosion at noon on Sunday. The company has been in charge of

the operation to clear the site, which is to become home to Nelson-based Fort Vale, a specialist production company. An exclusion zone will be set up for

Sunday’s demolition operation and the firm has organised a safe viewing area for people who wish to watch the dra matic explosion. None of the surrounding properties

are included in the exclusion zone and residents have been invited to go along and watch. Police will be in attendance and

Simonstone Lane will be closed to traf fic for around 10 minutes while the demolition takes place. The plant was home to Philips Com

ponents for years until the plant’s clo sure last year.

SABDEN

Coffee Littlemoor residents are busy knitting and creating craft items for a stall at their Hallowe’en coffee morning on Monday, October 31st, from 10-30 a.m. onwards. They will also have a tombola and raffle to raise money for Can cer Relief Macmil lan. Admission is£l.

Calendar The 2006 calendar beautifully illustrat ed by pupils at Sab- den Primary School is now on sale from school, priced £2.99.

The school provided the illustrations for the calendar for Dor ian House Children's Hospice, Chorley, and every month has a picture created by a pupil.

The school has been associated with the hospice since one of its pupils, Matthew Lodge, spent his last months there. His mother is now a fund raiser and Matthew’s two sisters attend the school.

Just call into school or contact any parent or staff member to buy a calendar to support the hospice.

Firm’s help plea to reopen village pub!

A PUB company is appealing for local sup port for its plans to reopen a village pub. Punch Taverns wants to

invest £350,000 in Chip ping’s Talbot Arms, which has been closed for almost 12 months. According to the compa

ny, its major refurbish ment scheme would see the Grade II listed building restored to its former glory both inside and out. I t would also create up to 20 jobs and a ttra c t custom from beyond the village with the promise of fine food. However, when the plans

came before Ribble Valley Borough Council’s plan ning committee, members were recommended by offi cers to refuse listed build-

a special visit to Sab- den as Lauren's rose queen's effort for the church. It starts at 7- 30 p.m. and admis sion is £5 and £2.50 which includes a hot supper.

Services This Sunday, Sabden Methodist Church will celebrate its gift weekend at the 9-30 a.m. service, to be taken by the Rev. G. Peddie. Mr Ernest Gorton will be guest preacher at Sabden Baptist Church in Clitheroe Road at the 10 a.m. service.

K

ing consent for the pro posed internal alterations. In his report, the planning officer wrote that some of the proposed alterations would, in his opinion, have a “detrimental impact upon the character of the listed building”. After some debate, members voted to delegate

author ity to make the final decision to their plan ning officers following fur ther negotiations with the pub company. Punch Taverns regional

operations director Mark Chapman said he was eager for work to s ta r t soon, so the site could be up and running in time for

Christmas. He said: “We have been drawing up plans since February and liaising with Ribble Valley Borough Council’s plan ning department for near ly three months. “ I t ’s disappointing

because there seems to be some resistance from with in the committee over minor structural alter ations included in our pro posal. “We hope a decision can

be reached soon, so we can press ahead with the refur bishment.” Punch Taverns says all

work will be sympathetic to the building’s heritage and listed status. Our picture shows how

the Talbot Arms would look if Punch Taverns’ proposals are approved, (s)
