joined together to wish fellow council worker Dorothy Birtwell a happy retirement. A legal officer for Ribble Valley Bor

ough Council, Dorothy celebrated her 46 years of service by holding a farewell party, organised by herself, at the council chamber. Clitheroe born and bred, Dorothy

began her local government career as a shorthand typist for the former Clitheroe

■ Borough Council and was promoted to typing supervisor when it formed as Rib ble Valley Borough Council in 1974. After deciding to return to studying in

her 40s, she gained a professional qualifi cation from the Institute of Legal Execu tives and was appointed the council’s legal executive and later made legal offi cer in 1996. A member of T r in i ty Methodist

Church, Dorothy enjoys spending her spare time involved with the church as a Sunday school teacher, choir member and organist.

. . Dorothy, who admitted she is looking

forward to some well-deserved holidays, said her last day at work was a sad one. “It vviU be a big, big change for me,” she

commented. ■ “I am passionate about the Ribble Val

ley and ever3fthing that goes on here and will continue to be interested.” ■ Dorothy, who received cards and pres

ents from her friends and colleagues, said it has been a privilege working vvith them. Ribble Valley Borough Council chief executive, David Morris added: “We wish Dorothy well for the future and thank her for her outstanding contribution to the council and the people of Ribble Valley.” Our picture shows Dorothy with guests at her party. RIBBLE Valley MP Nigel Evans is set to back leadership contender David Davis in the forthcoming Conservative, leadership battle. Speaking exclusively to the Clitheroe

Advertiser and Times, Mr Evans said: “David Davis has the right attitude, the right personality and the right back ground. He would make a terrific leader. “Although we did increase our majority

in the Ribble Valley last month, there were seats just below us in which we tailed to make a similar advance. I believe he’s the right person to lead the Conservative party to the next election and make those gains which are so key to us forming a govern ment again.” Shadow Home Secretary Mr Davis, a

right-winger who grew up on a council estate, previously ran as a candidate in the 2001 leadership contest. He failed to gather enough support from Tory MPs to make it through to the ballot of party members. Party chairman under Iain Duncan Smith, he was sacked by phone whilebn holiday, to be replaced by'Theresa May. Mr Davis is thought to be popular with

grassroots Tories and is favourite Mth the bookmakers to succeed Mr Howard. Mr Evans added: “There are lots of peo;-

ple across the country who have been for gotten during the last eight years, especial ly people living in council houses. With.his background, he is more than comfortable working with those who are consistently undervalued, he understands their needs and desires and would certainly help to make sure th a t the Conservative party speaks for everyone.” Despite persistent rumours linking Mr

Evans with the leadership contest, he has shrugged off any leadership ambitions claiming he “made his mind up a while back” a fte r witnessing first hand the painful demise of parliamentary colleagues William Hague, Iain Duncan Smith and Michael Howard. At present, MPs assume that Mr Davis's

challengers will include Alan Duncan, the shadow transport secretary; Andrew Lans- ley (health); John Redwood (deregulation); and possibly Tim Yeo, who has recently resigned from the shadow team. George Osborne, the 33-year-old shadow chancel lor, has ruled himself out this time. His friend and rival David Cameron (38) has • yet to make a move either way.

p “The broadcast regulators, OFCOM, [ changed the broadcasting licensing rules last ’■year, allowing for a new, third tier of local radio station. The new stations are called “community” or “access” radio stations. They are not licensed in order to make a prof it, nor to compete with existing commercial radio stations. Their purpose is very simple - to provide truly relevant local news and infor mation, at the same time providing opportu-

service to the area full time from next year. “We have 50 people directly

involved in the radio station, people from all over the Valley whose inter ests and ages are very diverse. These members have the exciting opportu nity of making their very own radio programmes that will be broadcast across the Valley - and most of them have never even stepped foot inside a radio studio before! “We have received tremendous

offers of support from local radio stations and BBC Radio Lan cashire is very interested in the project and has kindly offered to help with our training programmes. “Some of the BBC Radio Lan

cashire presenters are also due to attend our next Ribble Valley Radio meeting in June, where they will be on hand to offer help and advice to our members.

“The commercial radio station,

97.4 Rock FM, has been incredibly generous by donating some very expensive broadcast equipment for our studios. We have been given some brilliant studio equipment from St Martin’s College in Lan caster, who have been very support ive to us from the start. “We now have a studio set up for

our training sessions, giving all our members the opportunity to learn how everything works and to pre pare themselves for their first pro grammes. Working in partnership with Accrington and Rossendale College, we \vill also be able to offer accredited training that will result in a qualification in media studies. ■ “Our first trial broadcast will

hopefully begin in September. We will be broadcasting for a 28-day period, demonstrating the benefits: of having such a community-

focused radio station in the Valley. We will be bringing news, sport, topical debates and local event information along with mainstream and specialist music programmes. We have been very fortunate to secure an amazing prize to give away on the trial broadcast too - a week-long villa holiday in Tenerife, thanks tour friends at www.ribble- viewtravel.com. “We are always on the look-out

for new members who would like to participate, as well as existing com munity groups who could benefit from a dedicated programme. No experience is required, just enthusi asm! I would a l^ love to hear from local businesses who would like to promote their business by sponsor ing Ribble Valley Radio.
