TEENAGE pregnancies in the Ribble Valley are decreasing.
, Figures released by the
Office of National Statistics show that the rate of con ceptions has fallen from 20.1 per thousand young women aged 15 to 17 in 1998-2000 to 17.4 in 2001- 2003. In nearby Hyndburn the
rate has dropped from 66.2 to 57.4 and across Lan cashire the rate of concep tions in 15-17 year olds has fallen from 46.0 per thou sand young women in 1998 to 2000 to 41.5 in 2001-
2003. Overall, the teenage conception rate across the county has fallen by 16.4% since 1998 and nationally, the rate has fallen from 46.6 to 42.1 over the same peri od. ' East Lancashire’s teenage pregnancy strategy co-ordi nator, Claire Jackson, says the figures are a tribute to the hard work and commit ment of the organisations who work in partnership to reduce teenage conceptions acroffi the county: “Reducing teenage preg
nancy and supporting young parents needs a sus
tained partnership
approach between the rele vant organisations as well as parents and young people themselves. The latest fig ures indicate that this approach is paying positive di'vidends in Hyndburn and Ribble Valley, where we have a range of targeted services available for young people. “Taken together these
measures represent an effec tive and targeted approach towards meeting the needs of our most -vulnerable and at risk groups of young peo ple”.
Now there’s a hospice wristband
THE East Lancashire Hos pice is launching a wrist band to commemorate the 21st anniversary of its open ing. The wristbands have
'li I I 'vU, 0
been specially designed in the corporate blue colour of the hospice and include the dove logo along with “21 years of loving care” to sig nify the support they have given to more than 13,100 patients and their families during that time. The bands have been imported from China by Bla:ckburn busi nessman Abdul Shakoor who has used his friendly connections to design man ufacture and produce the goods to the hospice specifi cations. Available in two sizes the band will retail at £1.99 with all profits going directly to the hospice and
will be available from the hospice, hospice shop. Tilt UK, leisure centres, news paper offices and selected garage convenience stores. Harry Grayson, head of
fund-raising said “We want ed to produce a good quali ty, bone-fide wristband to commemorate our 21st; anniversary. The market leader we identified as the Livestrong brand manufac tured by Nike for the Lance Armstrong foundation was the type of quality we need ed to produce as many of the others were cheap imita tions”. He added “I am more than sure that we have
succeeded in finding the right type of quality prod uct that people will want and wear with pride. I would also like to extend thanks to Abdul for not only financing, the deal but also for his huge involve ment in making things hap pen so quickly” The hospice is looking for
sites who would consider retailing the bands on their behalf. The East Lancashire Hospice is situated on Park Lee Road and cares for ter minally ill patients and their families from Black burn, Darwen, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley and depends very heavily on the generosity and support of people from the region, with £500,000 needed to be raised from voluntary sources each and every year.
