NCT sale ANOTHER of the very popular “Nearly New Sales” organised by the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) will be held at Clitheroe United Reformed Church next Saturday, June 11th. The NCT sales have a
good reputation for high quality, “nearly new” items for children under five and are always well- supported. The last sale, in February, raised more than £750, but more funds are needed in order to train two ante-natal teachers. Anyone with suitable goods to sell can call Hazel on 01254 822707 for details. Sellers receive 70% of the price achieved for their goods, with the remainder boosting NCT funds. Next Saturday’s sale
runs at the church in Moor Lane from 10-30 a.m. until noon.

Margo delights her audience
ONE of East Lan cashire’s characters, Margo Grimshaw, was the speaker at Clitheroe Probus. She enthralled the audience with her reminiscences of a lifetime spent in the licensed trade. Her story began
on Blackburn rail way station with a parting from her church lads’ brigade boy friend only to meet up with a United States Army ser geant.' Not many people go from the church
lads’ brigade to the US Army in one night - so it was no surprise to hear that Margo had three proposals of marriage before her 18th birthday. Starting after her marriage, Margo
entered the licensed trade. Although having no experience, she soon found it to be very much to her taste. She quickly realised that promotion of
your pub was the way to pull the customers in. Margo advertised the first topless bar staff who would make their appearance at 10 p.m. on a soon-to-be busy night in her pub. The news ot this spread like wildfire in Blackburn and on the night in question the bar was hea'ving with customers. At 10 p.m. prompt her husband and a male member of the bar staff removed their shirts to a storm of beer mats and whistling! Success came swiftly. Applying for a fresh
licence, Margo was informed by the bench that there were five pubs within fi've miles, as the crow flies, of her proposed new prem ises, to which Margo replied “My cus-
■ tomers don’t fly” - she got the licence! Probus members were also offered some
serious thoughts on solving the present binge drinking problems and Margo said she had passed her ■views on to a cabinet ininister in the current government. All members agreed it had been a very
enjoyable talk, with much humour bal anced with some thought-provoking .moments.
