Give your hair a holiday I Sense in the sun - how tips from the experts...
NOT a care in the world-provided

WITH wardrobe, luggage and flight details fighting to be top of the list, our hair is often the last priority when we’re preparing for our holidays. But a few days in the sun can do more damage to your hair than you think. Sum mer sun and humidity, as well as saltwater and chlorine, can damage the hair’s cuticle, and result in dry, drab, split, brittle or frizzy locks. “Curly hair is more susceptible to dehy
dration than straight hair, which becomes more noticeable when the hair is blow-dried straight, so make sure you either moisturise more in the summer months, or reduce the use of the ceramic irons,” says celebrity hair stylist Neville Tucker. Hairdresser Darren Ambrose suggests
booking an appointment at least a week before your holiday. “Give yourself a week if you’re getting
your hair coloured. This will allow it to set tle down and soften; Have a trim also before you go, but not a major restyle as you don’t want to worry about coping ivith your new look in the sun,” he explains. “And it may sound like common sense.

but pack all your holiday hair care needs, Otherwise, if you’re on some far-flung shores, you may end up with products not suited to your hair.” ■ Make sure you also pack a hat to shield
your hair from the strong rays of the sun, and try to give your hair a break from the hairdryer whenever you can. There are lots of shampoos, conditioners
and styling products containing UV filters to help protect against the sun’s harmful rays. To keep hair protected during the day, use a protective shampoo and condi tioner. A leave-in conditioner ivith SPF Mil prevent your hair from drying out, but this must be reapplied after every dip and rinse. Going swimming? “Take a bottle of
fresh tap water with you to the beach to rinse out the sea salt from your hair,” says award-winning hairdresser Mark Hill. “Remember that salt water will dry and
dehydrate hair, so use a detox shampoo to cleanse away the salt, and condition Mth a moisture mask. If hair does start to dry out, brush it with a natural bristle brush.”

BRITAIN’S sun-worshippers - partic ularly youngsters who are looking for ward to sunnier days and summer hol idays - may be unaware of a dangerous cloud on the horizon. Rates of deadly skin cancer are set to
treble in the next 30 years if current trends in reckless sunbathing are not reversed, according to experts. They predict that children could be three
times more likely than their grandparents to develop malignant melanoma - the most deadly form of skin cancer. Follow the SunSmart Code, from Cancer
Research UK. For more information visit
wivw.sunsmart.org.uk • Stay in the shade between 11 a.m. and
3 p.m. ® Make sure you never bum O Always cover up with a T-shirt, wide-
brimmed hat and sunglasses • Remember to take extra care with
children • Use factor 15-plus sunscreen 0 Report any mole changes or unusual
skin growths promptly to your CP Dr Mike Brown, Boots'scientific suncare
adviser, says: “Young skin is extremely del icate, thinner and so much more suscepti ble to sun damage. Sunburn in childhood can double the risk of melanoma in later life. We get around 80% of our lifetime sun exposure before the age of 21 so it is crucial to protect young skin.” Selected stores have suncare consultants
to advise on protection and products. • Babies under 12 months should always
be kept out of direct sunlight, and this is particularly important if going abroad. 9 Up until age three, minimise children’s
exposure to direct sunlight as much as pos sible, and ensure that they wear high-fac tor sunscreen, protective clothing, hats and sunglasses. SUN FACTS ■ Sunscreens labelled 15 and higher
don’t protect you against all the sun’s rays. ' TRUE: The sun’s radiation, no matter
how strong the sunscreen, can still minute ly affect your skin and damage it. But at least you cut your chances of skin cancer by about 95%. ■ Suntans are a sign of skin damage. TRUE: A suntan is basically when your
skin gets “cooked” by the sun’s radiation. When you burn red, the damage is even worse.

B You don’t need sunscreen on cloudy
days. FALSE: The sun’s UV rays can penetrate
clouds with ease. Most people benefit from sunscreens
. with Sun Protection Factor (SPF) num bers of 15 or higher. The higher the SPF factor, the longer you will be protected - you should always apply sunscreen on a regular basis as it will get rubbed off. Sunscreens with SPF numbers higher
than 15 may work better for people who are fair-skinned, live at high altitudes, work or play outdoors for much of the day. Swimming and perspiration reduce the
actual SPF value of many sunscreens - even those that are water-resistant - so you have to reapply the product often. To get the maximum protection from
your sunscreen, apply at least one large handful about 30 minutes before you go outside, and reapply after swimming, tow elling yourseh dry or participating in any vigorous activity that causes perspiration.
