A magical afternoon of fun at playground
ON a day of heavy show ers, the sun came out to celebrate the opening of the first phase of the play ground in Sawley. , The scheme was identi
fied by a REAL village survey in 2002 which high lighted a need for a recre ation area in this rural ■vil lage. A sub-committee was formed and after the Tru man Estate donated land next to Sawley Abbey, planning permission and Ancient Monument Con sent were obtained. ■ With th e help of
Thespians’ fancy fund-raising
FANCY dress was the flavour of the evening as amateur thespians from Ribchester held a fund raising dance to boost funds for th e ir summer tour to the Edinburgh International Festival. More than 60 people
enjoyed the VE themed evening a t Ribchester Parochial Hall dressed as wartime soldiers and nurs es. The event was organ ised to raise money to help send eight performers to
the festival later this year. Guy Mason, Treasurer
of the Ribchester Amateur Theatr ical Society (RATS), said: “I t was a really good evening - the jazz band that played were awesome and they really helped everyone get into the 1940s mood.” Mr Mason, who will play
a soldier called Tom in the play, added: “We’re hoping the evening ■will have raised our profile as ideally we like to gain some form of spon
sorship to enable us to bring some local residents of Ribchester up with us when we to u r in Edin burgh.” RATS will perform “The
■War Bus” at the Edin burgh International Festi val from the 15th August alongside Christopher Wheeldon’s acclaimed new production of “Swan Lake” and Anthony Neilson’s British staged premiere of John Adams’s opera “The Death of Klinghoffer”.
Richard Jackson, project manager of Clitheroe the F u tu re, funding was obtained for Phase One from Ribble Valley Bor ough Council, Lancashire County Council, the Local network Fund, the envi ronment Fund, Johnson Matthey, Castle Cement, Townson Bros, NatWest Bank and the parish coun cil.
The residents of Sawley
gave both practical and financial suppor t and encouragement . More equipment for the play ground will be provided by the summer holidays. The ribbon was cut to
officially open the play ground by seven-year-old Jonathan Bird on behalf of the younger members of the ■village. The afternoon contin
ued with the annual picnic and sports in the magnifi cent grounds of the abbey. Stirring music was pro'vid- ed by the “Pronkjewail” Dutch stre e t organ and everyone entered into the spirit of the celebration
involving races, games and fun. Entertainment and magic for the younger chil dren was provided by “Uncle Peter”. The whole afternoon was a magical event and everyone is looking forward to Sawley Picnic 2006. Results.
