A RED Ensign - the highest honour of the British Merchant Navy Association - was present ed to Ribble Valley Mayor
Coun. Charles Warkman. The presentation was made to
thank Ribble Valley Borough Coun cil for recognising Merchant Navy Day on September 3rd. This date marks the opening day
of the Second World War and com memorates the first allied maritime casualty when the SS Athenia, an unarmed merchant ship, was sunk by a U-boat with the loss of 19 crew, both men and women, and 93 pas sengers.
The Red Ensign was flown at
half-mast a t Clitheroe Castle in recognition of these Merchant Navy seamen and others who lost their lives during the First and Sec ond World Wars. Coun. Warkman, a war veteran himself, received the Red Ensign on
behalf of the council. During the presentation, Capt.
David McNamee, chairman of the Ribble Valley branch of the associa tion, said that the Merchant Navy Memorial at Tower Hill records the names of 36,000 seafarers of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who died in both world wars and have no known grave but the sea. He added th a t in the Second World War the Merchant Navy had
a higher ratio of casualties than any of the armed services. The total sac rifice during the 20th Century is known to be more than 46,000 men and women. “With such devoted and unstint
ing service to the nation it will not come as any surprise to find that many seafarers felt somewhat over looked and forgotten when the lau rels and accolades were being bestowed,” he said. “People are fully aware of the
much deserved patronage and sup port given to the armed services over many years. Many people, not just seafarers, wished the Merchant Navy to be similarly acknowledged and were just waiting for a lead and an opportunity.”
Times are certainly changing
LIFE down on the farm is changing. Backridge Farm on the
outskirts of Waddington is still a hive of industry. But today cows and sheep
have been replaced by an interior designer, bicycle builder, beauty specialist, furniture maker - the list goes on - and there is even a candlemaker of national repute. For farmer Richard
Drinkall it is a new begin ning after foot and mouth. He has nine businesses
taking space in calf pens, bam, stables and beef stor age unit and the signs are that more could shortly be joining them. A gallery showcases a
selection of products on offer, while visitors are wel come to visit workshops and studios, all with panoramic views over the Ribble Valley toPendleHill. Ribble Valley Mayor and
