the penalty from the current £30 fixed penal ty fine to an offence that is subject to a three- point endorsement and a £60 fine. The Department for Transport point out
th a t a driver is four-times more likely to being involved in an accident if using a mobile phone while driving. One encouraging development, however, is
that researches have detected that the num ber of hands-free kits being used in cars has shown a steady increase since 2002.

um prices for the Three, BMW has, at the same time, out sold cars like the Ford Mondeo and the Vauxhall Vectra in the UK. I t is a fine balancing act and one
that BMW hopes to carry off even more successfully with the latest generation 3-Series. By all accepted theories of eco
nomics, what BMW is doing should not be possible. Preserving the brand equity and guaranteeing firm residual values ought to prove impossible with the sheer numbers of 3-Series flying off dealer fore courts. Although resale values of the out
going E46 model 3-Series are not as strong as they once were, this has as much to do with the car being replaced by the EDO generation model as anything else. There is always a certain level of
hyperbole surrounding new car launches, but the 3-Series warrants the superlatives. Jim O’Donnell, managing director of BMW Great

Britain, described the 3-Series as “the defining car of its generation and market sector” - and i t is impossible to argue otherwise. As much as Mercedes and Audi
would like to argue otherwise, the 3-Series is the benchmark car in the compact executive sector. It always has been and, likely, always will be. Three engines will be available
from launch. The entry-level ver sion is the 320i, an engine based on the architecture of the outgoing 318i motor. With improvements to the induction and VANOS systems, this engine jumps from the 318i’s 143 b.h.p. to a round 150 b.h.p.
Capable of covering the sprint to 60 m.p.h. in 8.8 seconds and able to hit 13'7 m.p.h., the 320i can also man age to eke 38.2 miles from a gallon of unleaded. Also much improved is the 320d,
BMW’s biggest seller in the old E46 generation car. In this instance, power leaps from 150 to 163 b.h.p. This diesel will take a fraction over eight seconds to get to 60 mip.h. and posts a top speed of 140 m.p.h. The 49.6 m.p.g. fuel economy figure is a real standout. Pride of place goes to the 330i
model. This features a 3.0-litre Val- vetronic engine with technology.

MW is evolving. Where as once there were premi um sector cars and main
knocking out 258 b.h.p. at 6,600 r.p.m. On the road this translates into a surprising amount of heft. The sprint to 60 m.p.h. from rest
will disappear in just 6.3 seconds and will run into BMW’s self- imposed electronic limiter at 155 m.p.h. with plenty to spare. Despite this, the fuel economy
figures are better than the old 231 b.h.p. 330i at 33.5 m.p.g. The Val- vetronic engine complies with the latest Euro IV emissions regula tions and features an electric water pump to cool the engine block for increased efficiency. A 2.5-litre power plant will follow
later in 2005, with an additional four-cylinder engine shortly there after. Also due to make an appearance
is an improved 330d, a storming @ 335d and a 340 b.h.p. turbo-charged 330Ti model. The M3 vermon is slated to feature a 400bhp 4.0-litre ^ V8. Bigger, quicker, cleaner and more economical, the 3-Series looks set to continue its astounding success. The styling looks spot on and if
BMW can continue to maintain the prestige image balanced against huge sales, the EDO 3-Series MU be just the latest model to provide a promotional sleight of hand. I t is all a question of image and
perception. Do we buy it? Looking at advance orders for the 3-Series, the answer is an unqualified affir mative.
