1 HE coming of Christmas heralds the biggest binge of the year when we shop till we drop, eat and drink till we pop, and force- — fully enjoy ourselves till we fall exhausted only to wake up
some time in the New Year wondering what it was all about. And Christmas is on its way again. The shops are tilling with glitter
and gaudiness. Radio and television are advertising special holiday programmes. Pubs, hotels and restaurants are decorated with tinsel and trees. Menus are full of turkey, pudding, mince pies, crackers and cream. Children are getting wilder with excitement by the minute, and the air is filled with growing expectation that even the most cyn ical must admit to. It's all so traditional, so predictable, so - what? It is at such a time that you begin wondering if it's all worth the
flutter and fuss? You wonder if perhaps you couldn't have spent the holiday a little differently? You long for a change and resolve next
year, things will be different. The trouble is, by next year you'll have forgotten your resolve, until
it's too late and you are once again deep in Christmas fuss. So, before
it is too late, stop, remember how you felt last year, then head down to the travel agent to see what they have to offer. Christmas breaks are becoming more and more popular with every passing year and there are stacks of exciting possibilities both at home and abroad. At home you can head off to some plush
hotel to enjoy a really traditional Christmas, with all the trimmings and none of the fuss. You can lounge around in comfort, in front of a huge log fire perhaps, and enjoy being waited upon, your every wish complied with and not a
thing to clear away. That of course may not be your idea of bliss.
You may long for something even further removed from your contacts with home, if so, you will probably be heading abroad. Away from Britain, with only the constraints
of travel and time, you can go anywhere on earth. Eastern and western Europe, North Africa, America, Canada, Australia or the Far East. You could even take a cruise. The world is your oyster, and it all depends on whether
you want snow or winter sun. Head down south beyond the equator, and
the summer is at its height. Christmas in A^- tralia and New Zealand is a festival celebrated with barbecues and parties on the beach. Head west to the American and Canadian
Rockies and you can ski even when there is m yet insufficient snow in the Alps. Head towards Eastern Europe where there are nations that are still rediscovering their own traditions of Christmas. Head north east into Scandinavia and discover the Land Of The Midnight Sun and visit Father Christmas’s grotto. But you need not travel so far. Winter sun,
albeit less intense is to be found around the Mediterranean. Spain, North Africa, Israel, Italy and Turkey can all offer warmth in weather and hospitality and they are not alone. There are package tours galore to see you
comfortably through the holiday. You can trav el independently, you can rent an apartment in some romantic resort and cater for yourself on Christmp Day. All i t needs is courage and
imagination. S u p p o r te d S' J
