v e r y year, as we clear away the re usable Christmas decorations and try to

remove every last pine nee dle from the furniture, we vow that next year will be different - but it never is. It takes tremendous

strength of character to ignore traditions that stretch back way before Christianity. This is the time of winter for celebra tion and decoration so cele brate we must. Mind you, it’s possible to

make things a little easier for yourself if some careful

thought goes into the busi ness. For a start, well con structed, set pieces can look wonderful, are easy to move and dust underneath and can be dismantled and packed easily away for next year. And it couldn’t be easier

these days with dry oasis and other floristry aids readily on sale. You can stand the oasis

on anything you have to hand. After that you simply arrange your artificial greenery, twinkly bits, can dles (don’t ever light theml) and little, coloured baubles.

Placed about the rooms they will look very festive. Decorations these days are very adaptable if you use your imagination. Free-standing decorations

are very attractive, but wall hangings are even better. You can of course drape

the place with garlands but, if you can’t for whatever reason, consider set pieces on your walls. Wreaths are traditional (again frames are easily bought or made from stiff wire), even more traditional is the wreath suspended horizontally beneath the centre pendant.

i It should be decorated with holly tinsel and candles, though again, for safety, these should never be lit. In some areas, sweets and foil-wrapped

cakes are suspended from the underside to be taken off and consumed after midnight

on Christmas Eve. Don’t buy your natural greenery too

early in the season. If you do, be prepared to replace it just before the festive day arrives. This applies abo to the Christmas tree, though there are preparations that you can spray onto the branches to prevent excessive needle fall. It is still better to keep the room in

which the tree stands unheated until Christmas Day however, as this will ensure it remains looking fresh and green right up

to the end. If you prefer an artificial tree of course,

you have stacks of choice and some of the latest designs are quite difficult to distin guish from the real thing. The best tend to be very expensive but,

as they will last for many years, they are an investment well worth making. Be creative in your decorating. Make use of everything, oranges, tanger ines and kumquats in bowls tied round

^ with red or green ribbon, look splendidly ^ festive as do bowls of fragrant, festive pot- I pourri incorporating gold and silver sprayed twigs and tiny cones. Don’t overlook the beauty of dried flow-

j. ers, seed pods and sprayed branches, they w can make the b^e of a spectacular display. Many of these things can be found on the ground beneath trees and shrubs and require little more than a light spray \vith paint, a brush of glue and a dusting of glit

ter. It’s all a matter of making the ordinary

look extraordinary. As the carol says, “Deck the hall with

boughs of holly....’Tis the season to be jolly!” This year, deck your halls with holly and anything else you can think of, and have a very jolly Christmas!
