Popular former landlady dies
by Julie Wintle
POPULAR former Clitheroe landlady Mrs Betty Walker h a s .
died aged 75. Mrs Walker had spent the last
few weeks in hospital following an operation. One of the town’s best-loved char
acters, her cheery disposition was well matched to a life in the licens ing trade. Most people will remember her
for the time she spent as landlady of Clitheroe’s Waggon and Horses pub and later as a caretaker steward for Clitheroe Conservative Club. One of five daughters to Mr and
Mrs Bernard and Dorothy Cham- ley, she grew up in Clitheroe attend ing St James’ CE Primary School and Ribblesale High School. As a youngster, she worked in the
family business, her father’s bakery at the bottom of Parson Lane, before trying her hand at shop and factory work after leaving school at the age of 14. But it was after marrying her late
husband, Mr Cyril Walker, that she found her real forte in life with the couple taking over the Waggon on Pimlico Road in February 1966 - a
w
role they both enjoyed for the next 17 years. During that time, Mrs Walker,
who loved to socialise, made many friends and both herself and her husband, to whom she was married for 55 years, became heavily involved in the local French Con nection group. They also both held prominent positions in the local Licensed Victuallers’ Association and other brewery associations. After leaving the Waggon and
moving house to Hawthorne Place, the couple then spent around six years as caretaker stewards for the Conservative club, looking after the club when the full-time stewards were on holiday. This hectic work schedule left
Mrs Walker little free time, but as her only son Nicholas (35) recalls, it did not stop his mother from pursu ing her other major passion in life - chatting and socialising. - “She knew everybody and every
thing. It used to take hours to walk from one end of the town to the other. Socialising really was her forte. “She just had such a light-heart
ed and down-to-earth character,” he commented. . A funeral will be held tomorrow
at 10-20 a.m. at Accrington Crema torium and afterwards at Clitheroe Conservative Club where all the friends she has made over the years will be welcome. , Mrs Walker, who suffered from glaucoma, requested family flowers only and any donations to be made to the Fight for Sight charity. They should be sent to c/o Calverleys Funeral Services, Chatburn Road, Clitheroe, BB7 2AP.
Top tips for camcorder enthusiasts
TIPS on how to make short, inter esting films for competitions were given to Ribble Valley Camcorder Club members by chairman Ken Brass. He emphasised the need for an
interesting topic and the use of sus pense and unpredictable endings with a good punch line. He gave examples of entries to a recent competition at Preston and their relative merits. Several members are to visit the Burnley Camcorder Club next month to see their 'News- reel', which is a night of short films made around their locality by vari ous members and which are a con temporary record of the area and its activities. Mr Brass showed a short film
that he had produced over the sum mer and involved his wife and grandson. The plot was a 4-wheel drive car being driven over an assault course by his wife, Marjorie,
with grandson strapped in the rear. In reality the only shot with his family in was taken on a garage forecourt and near his house. The other shots were of other drivers in the same car and by careful editing and simulating rocking movements of the child's cradle etc., he was able to create the illusion that all the action was continuous. Continuity was a point that was very impor tant since it was not all filmed on the same day and all actors must wear exactly the same clothing and the weather should be very similar for outdoor shots. This film demon strated clearly tha t you cannot always believe what you see and that with skill the eye can easily be deceived. John Whipp showed a film that
he is currently making involving a walker on Pendle Hill. He showed the shots required to make it fit together and become a cohesive
sequence. The out-takes were seen and the reasons for excluding cer tain shots. He outlined the need for several cameras to reduce the call to repeat shots to capture images from different angles and the bene fits of remote microphones to elimi nate imneccesary road noise. Mr Brass is co-ordinating a club
film, where most of the club will be involved. The plot, provisional script and the props required were discussed prior to filming starting shortly. Beware MGM. The club Christmas party and filin show is on December 10th at the
. Rugby Club new building on Little- moor and tickets are £6 from John Wright, on 01200 423384, and include hot pot supper. Everyone welcome. The next meeting is on November 23rd at the New Inn, Parson Lane, 7-30 p.m.
RICHARD DUGDALE A cloudless sky greets ramblers
AFTER several days of heavy rain and squally showers, there was a sunny and cloudless sky as Clitheroe Ramblers set off on their trek to the Centre of the Kingdom. Ben Brown led a party
of 15 out of Dunsop Bridge following the River Dunsop to Foot Holme and then on to Brennand Farm. From here there was a
steady climb up along a good track above the Brennand River, which petered out just below
the foot of Round Hill Water. Careful navigation was
required along Brown Syke to determine the exact point at which to leave the stream and climb the heather bank ing for a distance of some 80 metres to grid refer ence 637.7 565.5 - the exact Centre of Great Britain and the 401 prin cipal islands. Following the new
access legislation, there is now a legal right to visit this remote location,.
which the casual visitor would be unlikely to find, as there is nothing to mark this featureless spot. From here a compass
bearing was required to traverse the peak bog and heather to reach the Whitendale Hanging Stones, a fine view point, where lunch was taken. The original plan was
to descend Gutter Clough and cross the Whitendale River, which is fordable in normal con ditions.
However, this would
not have been possible after the recent heavy rain, so a compass bear ing was again required to regain the track leading back to Brennand Farm. On reaching the farm
six of the group returned to Dunsop Bridge via the outward route while the rest of the party followed the very muddy bridle way to Whitendale, adding one and a half miles on to the 10-mile walk before heading back to Dunsop.
