Football success for village youngsters

YOUNGSTERS from Thomeyholme RC Primary School are celebrating football success. They recently took

on all-comers from small schools across the Ribble Valley - and emerged as worthy champions. The team was made

up of pupils from Years 5 and 6, who emerged as champions from the event staged at Whalley CE Primary School. Team captain

the-match Elliott Shep herd in the Roefield goal, the game was made safe as in a nail-biting finish Bar rowford pressed on for an equaliser. Roefield worked hard to gain these three points.

the Wolves began to launch some attacks of their own, and just before half-time Thompson scored a superb goal with a fierce shot from the left side of the penalty area. Another excellent strike

from Meyler early in the second half put the Wolves in control and, as the game progressed, the locals grew in confidence and could even have added to their goal tally. -Every member of the

continued their excellent start to the season with an emphatic 5-0 win over Wilpshire Wanderers. Melissa Mackay (2) Louise Meloy,

Chelsea Rinaldi and Jessica Owens netted the goals, while Jade Bolton was the pick of the United players. A single strike from Oliver

this setback superbly and equalised with a great goal as Liam Anderson’s trick ery set up Stephen Tandy for a clinical finish. Akzo are a big strong

who began to get on top in the second half, but the Wolves defence remained solid and there were few clear cut chances for either team. But eight minutes from

time. Wolves equalised when Matthew Sedgwick floated in a free kick, and Mark Higson arrived at the back post to finish from close range. The locals were looking

good for a draw a t this stage, but with only a cou ple of minutes left to play Akzo clinched the points with a fine headed goal.

Wolves best chance was

a shot on the volley from Kieran Styles midway through the first half that could only rattle the wood work. And in the dying min

CHANCES were a plenty in this game but once again i t was Wolves who squandered them while their Burnley opponents could not fail to hit the back of the net. Only super-sub Simon

Clitheroe lose out in derby clash..

Colne and Nelson . . .22 CUlheroc RUFC......... 3 THIS disappointingly desperate performance by the town team saw Clitheroe crash to a wretched defeat at the hands of old local foes Colne and Nelson. The game had scarcely

started when injury struck and captain Dave Watson had to be replaced - hard ly the confidence boost the Litttlemoor men were looking for in a tense derby encounter. And things never really

improved as several more injuries took their toll, with Clitheroe having to reshuffle their line-up

. every 20, minutes, leaving an exhausted supply of

. replacements. •Nevertheless, Clitheroe

did s ta r t confidently enough and had Colne pinned back in their own 22 for most of the first quarter, but, despite hav ing a number of kickable penalties, Nathan Peel unfortunately had left his best kicking boots at home and was only on target once as the locals failed to make theri advantage count. Colne and Nelson then

moved up a notch, and after some close driving from their pack, created an easy overlap to score a converted try, and with a penalty to follow, it put Clitheroe 10-3 down at the break. The second period was a bit of a disaster for the

Maroon and Golds as, although they were quite productive at the line-out, in contrast, the scrum maging was a disgrace. They were under mas

sive pressure from the All Blacks on their own ball, unable to give the backs any platform on to which they coiild show their skills. And as the match wore

on, Colne visibly gained in confidence, whereas Clitheroe wilted in a most alarming fashion. The injury count had a

part to play in this, but it was more worrying how the senior players failed to supply any inspiration for the lesser experienced ones. Fortunately, a quirk in

the fixture list will enable Clitheroe to exorcise their ghosts with a rematch at Littlemoor in just three weeks’ time. Prior to th a t are two

more league matches at home, starting on Satur- ^ day, with Lytham the visi- tors, kick-off 2-30 p.m.
