organised a petition a t the request of many villagers to have a crossing installed in Chatbum to replace the two we used to have th a t were removed. This was because the villagers felt the traffic was increasing so much i t was becoming difficult for the older residents of the sheltered accommodation to cross the road to the shops. In ju s t over a week, more
than 400 people had put their names to it, which must repre sent almost every household in the village. I duly took the peti tion to the council offices to
find out to whom I should send it.

only a fairytale ONCE upon a time a town called Clitheroe served well its residents and also the surrounding local vil lages. I t had a traffic problem with
traffic going through the town cen tre, so a bypass was constructed to ease the problem. This was so successful that .signs
were erected on the bypass to encourage people to visit this ancient town. So the people came, and also four

work here, who could see that it was only a matter of time before this happened and will happen again if nothing is done. We are elected to listen to the
people we represent and help them fight their corner, but who has listened to us! No one. We are certainly not going to
let this matter drop as the traf fic is now so bad it takes more than five minutes to exit Ribble Lane on to the main road - it used to be a matter of seconds. How the police can say there
has been no significant increase in traffic is laughable as we who
live here 24/7 see it every hour of every day. A crossing is now a must and should be made a priority before someone else is killed.

Parking, cars
are chief issues CONGRATULATIONS to Mr A. Warrington - letters Octo ber 7th - for cutting through all the pomposity and posturing on the issue of the Mosque development, and for making the one incontrovertible point on which all residents of Castle View/Kirkmoor Road agree; there is already too much park ing and traffic down a road
which has only one entrance and exit. Unlike some of your corre spondents, he speaks with
authority because he lives there. I t was this safety considera
tion which led to the residents opposing both an earlier hous ing development and the more recent arts centre proposal. I would also add, in support of Mr Warrington, that the quali ty of life of those who live in the area is a not inconsiderable fac tor; we chose to live where we do because it was a pleasant residential area, offering rela tively quiet and safe ambience to young and old alike. The building of a place of public ^ emb ly will cause an
appreciable deterioration in that quality of life, while fur
ther increasing the already dan gerously high traffic volumes passing through a dangerous junction in the town. It is intriguing to note that it
is those who write to you from outside the area who are the ones trying to distract from the real issues by attributing racist motives to opponents of the scheme, accusing us of being intolerant, and forgetful of our
responsibilities to others in the community. I, for one, take exception to
being lectured from afar about tolerance and learning to live with those of other faiths; this is not an issue and to raise it ill serves both the Muslim and non-Muslim communities, by playing right into the hands of political extremists. My position remains as it has
always been: the area under discussion is not suited to building a place of public assembly, whoever the intended users, and the same arguments, based on traffic volume and the quality of life of the residents, which I put forward against previous planning applica
tions, are just as pertinent in this case. Nor should we lose sight, too,
of the fact that whatever the decision on this particular appUcation, there still remains the development of the remain ing and much larger site: a prospKt of more traffic, pollu tion, invasion of privacy and noise. Ah well, some of us
should be battle-hardened vet erans by then!
PETER A. ANWYL, Castle View, Clithcroc
Something of
benefit to all IP the council is to sell its for- mer depot off Kirkmoor Road, Lhtheroe, it should be sold with the proviso that no sectarian building - be it a church, hall,
or Mosque etc. - can be built upon it.
Planning permission should given to something
the RibWe Valley community. If we English are so "intoler ant, as some people would
have us believe, why do so
many immigrants want to come and live here? Why are there so many Asian food out lets and taxi drivers in Clitheroe and most other towns and cities in England. Just who are their customers? The English are, in the main,
a tolerant people, but sadly that tolerance has been greatly abused, mainly by career politi cians with a policy of divide and rule. Finally, I think local con
cerns should be given first con sideration. The residents in the Kirkmoor Road area should be asked what they want. After all, they live there 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Barrow is the
obvious choice! I’M very impressed by the pub lic-spirited view of Zoe, of Bar- row. Obviously, Barrow is the
place to build the Mosque. I t is handy for the A59, so
that Muslims from Accrington and Blackburn can commute easily. Zoe, then, can have instant
local viewpoints, instead of having a voice a t three miles range.

Yet more hassle
for everybody PROM the initial figures for the number of parking ticket issued in the first few weeks, it would appear the council will raise around £4,000 to £5,000 per month, but some of this it will never collect. I t would seem th a t this
would barely cover the cost of the three wardens. I, for one, have never had a problem park ing during the day in Clitheroe, so it seems rather pointless and will just cause people a bit more hassle.

supermarkets came to town which were then given all the best car parks on a massive scale. A few small areas were left,
payable of course. The town grew, businesses grew, house prices rose, council tax rose. “Oops, Clitheroe had a parking problem.” Never fear, Parkwise is here. So dream on, you may grow up
to be a Parkwise employee, a clam per or even a town councillor - any thing is possible. You could, of course, dream of
free, tree-lined car parks with a traffic-free town centre. However, dream on, this is only a

A few words of
advice, thaf s all MR BROWN in his response to my le tte r on the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 has
jumped to the conclusion that there is a hidden agenda behind the mes sage my letter conveyed. Can I say to Mr Brown tha t I
have no axe to grind. I do not own any land in the designated areas, I do not hunt, I do not shoot, although I do fly-fish. I am a great admirer of our beautiful country side, a dedicated conservationist and I have trekked the wild expans es of Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire since the age of five. There is no denying that the haz
ards I mentioned are out there and their dangers can be exacerbated by adverse weather conditions. All I am saying to Mr Brown and oth ers of a like mind is, be wary and consider the financial implications.

So sorry for any
inconvenience I AM writing to apologise to mem bers of the public for any inconve nience that is being caused during the building work to our house at Black Lane Croft, Clitheroe. I thought it would be courteous
of me to explain what is happening. We are having a disabled exten
sion built on to our existing build ing for my husband, (seen in last week’s issue of your newspaper). At the moment, he has to trans
fer from his wheelchair to the stair lift and then back into his wheelchair again every time he needs to use the toilet and when going to bed. This causes him
extreme pain due to the nerve damage th a t he sus tained when he was involved in an HGV acci dent. When the
extension is built i t will provide Simon with a down stairs bedroom and shower room with a toilet, which will keep his transferring to a minimum. We have had
several com ments from p a s s e r s - b y about the vans being parked at the back of our house part ly blocking the walkway from the train station. The path is being kept as clear as
it possibly can be. I t would be impossible for the
builders to carry out the work with out access, but we would like to assure the public that any vehicles will be either loading or unloading and will clear the way as soon as they have finished. We are sorry for the inconve
nience caused by the building work, but i t is essential for making Simon’s day-to-day living as "nor mal" and as pain-free as possible.
