day, October 30th, and should be available for rehearsals and per formances a t the theatre from Sunday, November 21st. Children should be accompa
nied to the auditions by a parent or legal guardian. The play is a brand new stage
adaptation of the story by Henry James. It tells the frightening story of
Miss Grey, a young governess, who arrives at Bly to take charge of Flora and Miles, two orphaned children. Shortly after, she begins to see
strange figures - a man and a young woman - who seem to be the ghosts of Quint and Miss Jes- sel, former valet and governess at Bly. Miss Grey begins to wonder if
she is suffering from a terrible derangement when she realises th a t no one else can see these ghosts, but then, to her horror, she realises that it is not her, but the children th a t the ghosts want. She determines to save the chil
dren from destruction and damnation at the hands of these “devils”, but will her courageous efforts be enough to save them from tragedy?

LAST^week I received a letter from a reader who has recently been diagnosed with Goeli- ac Disease and she would like me to feature

some dishes which do not contain gluten. (joeliac disease is a life-long inflammatory con
dition of the gastro-intestinal tract, caused by gluten, a protein in wheat, and similar proteins in rye, barley and oats. .
Gluten damages the lining of the small intestine
which greatly reduces the ability of the gut to absorb adequate nutrients from food and can lead to severe illness resembling malnutrition. In the 1950s it was thought to be almost exclu
sively a childhood condition, but-now it is recog nized th a t many more adults than children are diagnosed. Coeliac symptoms can manifest themselves at
any age and, according to Coeliac Society statis tics, most coeliacs are diagnosed when aged between 30 and 45 years. Recent figures even show
more over-60s than under-16s being diagnosed in a year. Coeliac patients may be acutely and severely iU
with weight loss, vomiting and diarrhoea or they may have chronic almost trivial symptoms such as tiredness, lethargy and breathlessness. Usual S3rmptoms would be somewhere between
these extremes. Adults may have a history of abdominal or intestinal upsets, or they may sud denly develop the condition at any time. Anaemia, abdominal discomfort, mouth ulcers
and weight loss are common features. They should not treat themselves with a gluten-free diet before seeking medical help. Some people are diagnosed as coeliac without having obvious symptoms. For example, the condition may be picked up when rel atives of a coeliac are being studied. • The only treatment necessary to return the
intestine to normal is a strict gluten-free diet. Sometimes vitamin or mineral supplements may be
required to start with. The hospital consultant will know from tests what the patient needs, and sup plements should not be taken without' medical supervision. To avoid serious complications of the condition, a strict gluten-free diet is necessary for life.' Coeliac disease used to be rare, but more and
more doctors are beginning to recognize the disor der in their patients. The average incidence in the United Kingdom is 1 in 100 people. It is also known that the condition runs in families. Here is a recipe for a main course of beef with
orange.which is gluten free, wheat free and cggless. If readers of Dish of the Week have any interest ing recipes which could help fellow sufferers please
