had caused the selectors some headaches, none more so in the back line where both wingers were out, replacements James McAloonan and debutant Simon Coulter made a good impression. In the pack, Ed Thorn-
ber made his first full start in the second row boiler room, and the cherubic Will Jones returned at hooker. But after a good start
that saw a forced penalty for fly half Nathan Peel to slot over, the Maroon and Golds were up against it. This was especially seen
in the scrum, where Bedi ans had a substantial weight advantage. However, in spite of
being bogged down in their own 22 for long peri ods, Clitheroe knew if they could weather the storm the bigger Bedians for-

wards would tire. Regrettably though, the
visitors failed to read the script and Clitheroe shipped three tries in close succession. Although slightly
alarmed, the Littlemoor team were undaunted and resolutely set about their task. This was typified when
a Bedian winger was caught out after a high kick, dispossessed by loose forward Andrew Rigby, and with top-notch support from Thornber, the ball was popped up to second row Bob Wilkinson for a fine try. After the interval
Clitheroe let yet another try in, but as before, it only served to push them to greater heights, and for most of the second half Clitheroe threw the proverbial kitchen sink at the Bedians' line. And as the visiting pack
weakened, the town team produced some tremen dous aggressive rugby. Only after pounding the
line for what seemed like an age, skipper Dave Wat son was able to sneak round the e d p of a ruck for his try, which Peel con verted to reduce the deficit to an 11-point gap. Further pressure saw
Oily McEntyre over, only to be unable to ground the ball, then McAloonan seemed to be in over the comer, but again was cru elly denied. Then inevitably, with
Clitheroe throwing every thing into attack, they were left exposed a t the back, and Bedians claimed a final try to extinguish any lingering hopes of a comeback - leaving a beat en but unbowed Clitheroe to rue those early scores. DucMnfield................30 Clitheroe Cavaliers . .12 CLITHEROE Cavaliers saw their game on Satur day end in defeat, but not before giving a good account of themselves. Duckinfield scored on
five minutes as they took advantage of poor hand ing and a spilled ball from Clitheroe backs. But Clitheroe responded with some strong forward
ruck play taking them into the Duckinfield half.
The ball was driven to
the line by the Clitheroe pack, and burly winger ' Ashley Ashton was in sup port to touch down. However, the loss of
Andrew Caunce in the first 10 minutes to a head injury did not help Clitheroe's cause, as an under strength back line struggled to contain the Duckinfield backs from then on, as the home side strack with two more tnes. But on th e stroke of
half-time, Clitheroe showed th e ir potential ■with some fast ruck balls, creating several phases of play for th e backs to attack. Then Wood broke from
the base of the scrum to link up with Rowley and feed the rampant Curphy. who in turn skittled sever al defenders to score, neat ly converted by Rowley. In the second half.
Clitheroe started well and almost crossed the white wash twice, but the last pass went astray. But the loss of experi
enced centre Caunce took it’s toll as the Duckinfield back row broke the Clitheroe line twice more to score. The Cavaliers showed
strength in character to maintain a very respectable scoreline and can only improve as a
result. Seventeen-year-olds
Andy Hayton and Jo Newton, both products of the Clitheroe Royal Gram mar School team, stood out for the Cavaliers. Hayton had an excellent
full debut for the club, with many strong runs and great tackling, while Newton linked well with father Dave throughout. A mention must also go
to Ian Poole who, playing with a sprained ankle sus tained in the early mm- utes, tackled and hounded the opposition well.

in the biathlon with sixth place. The Hightons made it two from'two in these qualifiers,
