DEDICATED followers of fashion from across the Ribble Valley took part in the glitz and glamour of a fashion show host ed by the borough’s Mayoress, Mrs Ruth Warkman. The charitable event, featur

ing fashions from popular Blackburn ladies’ outfitter Foxy Lady, was held at the Mytton Fold Farm Hotel, in Langho, attracting around 80 women.

A model event for charity The show raised more than

£500 to be split between Chor- ley children’s hospice, Derian House, and the international charity Water Aid. As well as admiring stunning

costumes, guests were served wine and shortbread throughout the evening. Mrs Warkman is pictured

with the models at the fashion show. (T061004/3)

This is given by Nat West head office to

branches which deliver a quality service across a range of customer needs, and cus tomers had to fill in a questionnaire to score the standard of service given. Manager Steve Fishwick said: “When

you work so hard as a team it’s great to receive a national award from the bank. “However, i t means so much more

because it is our customers’ comments that have put the branch in the top spot.” Mr Chris Brindley, Nat West’s regional

managing director, said: “The most important point of this award is that the customers of the branch have told us that we deliver a service that meets and even exceeds their expectations.

by Stagecoach and before that, Ribble Buses, has been the sub ject of a long-running planning saga since Lancashire United decided it no longer needed a depot in town. Developer Rowland Homes,

based in Leyland, has taken over the site from Broughton Hall company Candlemakers Croft Ltd. The main depot was closed in

March, 2002, and most staff were transferred to the compa

ny’s bases in Blackburn and Burnley, where Lancashire United’s sister company. Bum- ley and Pendle Travel, is based. The new scheme will include

three blocks of eight ap a r t ments, with parking provided in a central area as well as one parking space at the front of blocks one and two. One letter of objection was

submitted to the council from a nearby resident, who voiced concerns over loss of car park

ing space nearby. Chief plan ning officer Mr John Macholc said in a report that the scheme provided little public open space and there would normal ly be a requirement for the developer to provide such facil ities. However, he added that a

committed sum had been paid to the council for the upgrading of the existing open space. Overall, he said, the scheme was in keeping with the area.

The red and the white are about to reunite!

by Natalie Cox

THE red and white roses of Lancashire and Yorkshire will he uniting in the Ribble Valley later this month. On October 23rd, stone signs

marking the historic boundary of the two counties will be unveiled on the A59. The commemorative event at

Smithies Bridge, at the bottom of Sawley Brow, is the culmina tion of a crusade by the Unite Craven organisation to ensure the position of the old county boundaries is recognised. Although the administrative borders were altered in 1974

after local government reorgan isation, campaigners have maintained th a t the original boundaries have never been affected. Unite Craven has worked

closely with Lancashire Coun ty Council in relation to the design and siting of the mark ers, but all costs have been met by donations from the group, together with contributions from the Yorkshire Ridings Society and the Friends of Real Lancashire. Historic boundary signs have

already been unveiled on other main roads in the West Craven area, but siting one on the A59 has proved problematic.

As it was previously classed

as a tnmk road the A59 was the responsibility of the Govern ment’s Highways Agency, but now it has been officially “de- trunked” a permanent stone sign can be installed. Its official unveiling will take

place at 11-30 a.m. on Satur day, October 23rd. Organisers have invited for

mer cricketer and Yorkshire stalwart Fred Trueman to carry out the ceremony, but are still awaiting his response., Anyone wanting to attend

the ceremony, which marks the completion of Unite Craven’s campaign, are being urged to park in Chatburn Old Road,

Fair gives children chance to choose a favourite book

just off the A59. Insp Bob Ford, of Clitheroe Police, has also urged those who turn up on the day to take extreme care. . He said: “The A59 is partic

ularly busy on all days of the week. Traffic does travel very fast on it, so the best place for people to park would be Chat- bum Old Road where there is a lot of room. “I t is a 200m walk from the

site and I would ask people to take extreme care.” He added that anyone park

ing on the A59 itself would not only be causing danger, but also an offence as the A59 is a clear way.

by Scholastic Publications, chil dren at the school were asked to choose their favourite books.

They then had the chance to
