Closure of popular eating spot marks end of an era in village
ONE of Kibble Valley’s best-known eating spots, the Craven Heifer Inn, at Chaigley, closed its doors to the public last week. Landlord Mr Terry McGovern con
firmed that the public house would be put on the market within the next two weeks. Mr McGovern has run the popular free-
house, in Chipping Road, with his wife,
Janet, for the past 18 years. Speaking on the closure, Janet said:
“With sorrow, but lots of happy memories, Alan and Martha Wallbank and Terry and Janet McGovern have decided to close
the pub.”

Lots to see in Lakes trip
TWENTY-FOUR members of the Clitheroe Naturalists Society enjoyed a walk in the Lake District in fine weather and sunshine. Some 60 different types of wild flowers
were spotted, a young deer, several birds, a herd of Highland cattle and, strangely enough, three ostriches. The walk, led by Mr and Mrs Derek and
Marjorie Oldham, began with a steep climb from the shores of Windermere along Ghyll Head Road. They then branched off on a public foot
path to a vantage point from which the views over Lake Windermere made it all worthwhile. The group then crossed Rosthwaite
Allotment, keeping straight on to a field gate at Rosthwaite Farm. This farm is truly beautiful, full of colour from numerous plant tubs and immaculate
gardens. To complete the scene the owners had
constructed their own private tarn. Immediately after the farm the footpath
to Winster turns right through the larch plantation of Spring Wood. The track climbs gently across the slopes of Rulbuts Hill. As the path crossed the brow of the hill, the group saw the scattered houses of Win
ster. They continued down the track, towards
a field gate into the wood. An old slate slab bridges the stream and they followed along a shady green lane, and out through the garden of a renovated cottage to the road. Later they continued to Green Yew Farm
and took the next stile to the right and fol lowed the path to the Jubilee Bridge which crosses the River Winster - once the boundary between Westmorland and Lan
cashire. They then climbed beside the wall to join
the track which passes the rear of Birket House and the Georgian Winster House. They turned uphill by a large barn and
continued until Ghyll Head Reservoir before descending back to the road where they rejoined the coach to return to
Clitheroe. The next walk is from Sedbergh on

BOLTON-BY- BOWLAND
Institute meeting Members of Bolton- by-Bowland WI were welcomed to the September meeting by the vice-president Mrs Maggie Morgan. A very short business meeting was held i during which mem bers were told that if a treasurer could not be found it would be necessary to close the group. Members were reminded that there will be a sales table in October to defray the expenses of the senior citizens’ party.
A very enjoyable parade of clothes shown by "Week enders" agents Paula, Freida and Gale was enjoyed. They sur prised their audience with the versatility, easy wearability and the fact that they were non-iron!
CHIPPING
Out of this world President of Chipping WI Mrs Rita Joyce, welcomed members to the September meeting in the village hall.
