Intake...................................d WADDINGTON suffered

a narrow defeat against Intake last Wednesday

night. The match was preced

ed by a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for Cate Sutcliffe, who passed away this month. Once the game was

underway, Waddington conceded a soft penalty in the opening seconds to put Intake 1-0 ahead. Then three minutes

later, a bad shout from the Waddington keeper saw the awayside add a sec

ond. In the 17th minute, a

pressured clearance from the Waddington defence produced an own goal, before Robert Lloyd put the home side back in the game with a deft chip over

the keeper. Waddington came out

strong in the second half, but on 55 minutes the home side got caught on the break allowing the Intake striker to make it

4-1. Chasing the game, Mar

tin Cane found the back of the net for the locals after a scramble in the Intake penalty box, and Michael Kindle gave the home side hope with some neat inter- play before slotting it calmly past the keeper. Waddington had a num

ber of chances in the last 10 minutes to bring the game level, but failed to beat the Intake keeper, who was named man-of- the-match.

F lu k e goal d en ie s Chipping victory

NEWLY-promoted Chipping kick-started their 120th anniversary season in the Pre ston and District Football League with a 1-1 draw against Leyland St Mary's. A weakened side soaked up

early pressure against a side unbeaten in the Second Divi sion this season, as Dave Ross and Johnny Fletcher battled hard in the middle of the park. The defence of Sam Wood-

head, Dean Austin and Ryan Hilton, along with debutant Mick Naylor, limited Leyland to long range efforts, which were comfortably dealt with by keeper Matt Ireland. After holding off the early

attacks, it was Chipping who took the lead as a threaded pass sent winger Richard Baines clear. He cut inside off his flank to coolly slot the ball home past the advancing keeper. The second half began very

evenly with both sides trying to gain the upper hand. Chipping were unlucky not

to extend their lead when a Fletcher header from a comer was handled on the line. How ever, the referee waved play on. Leyland continued to work

hard, and Ireland had to be quick off his line on a number of occasions. It took a fine save from Ire

land to deny a piledriver, although it was from the result ing comer that Leyland scored.

The ball was only partly cleared and, as it was returned, it took a slight deflection to drop agonisingly into the comer for a most fortunate late goal. •DOG INN kicked off the new Harry Dewhurst Sunday Memorial League season with a 1-1 draw against Foresterers at Memorial Park. After a nervy start, the Bud-

weiser Boys gradually found their way and finished the first half in the ascendancy. However, a positive start to

the second period was blighted when the Blackburn side opened the scoring just seven minutes in. Despite this setback, the

Whalley side refused to give up, and their spirited display was rewarded when the evergreen Dave Dewhurst netted from close range on 68 minutes fol lowing an Immy Mayat corner. In a thrilling finale, both

sides had opportunities to win, with Dog Inn the likelier vic tors, but in the event both sides had to settle for a point. • CRAVEN League new boys Clitheroe Lions found their firet game against McBrides easier than expected, winning 9-3. Despite going one down early

in the game after a blunder from keeper Mashiter, the new comers held their nerve and replied with a brace just 10

minutes after. They then went 5-1 up after

an onslaught, including two deflections off new striker Christophe Pinard. The Lions were also awarded

a penalty after a McBrides defender was sent off for delib erate hand ball, only for new boy Clegg to miss. McBrides, to their credit hit

the Lions with two goals and made it a nervy time for the defence before Pinard scored, with other contributions from Zulfi, Johnson and a scuffed fin ish from Clegg. The side backed the win up

with a hard-fought 3-2 victory at Pendle Athletic. The game kicked off at a hec

tic pace, with the Lions the more dominant, and they took a deserved lead when Avci pow ered home a header. Pendle battled back and

scored two well-taken goals before the break. In the second half, the Lions

managed to gather their com posure and dictate the play, using the electric pace of their wingers Conti and Stoddart. The Lions soon levelled after

fluent play resulted in Zulfi whipping in a great low cross for Conti to rifle home. With a new found confi

dence, the locals finished off the home team with 10 minutes remaining after a great finish from Stoddart. • WFC Clitheroe recorded

their first points with a 4-0

demolition of Horton - and I backed that up with a 1-0 win | over unbeaten Crosshills. Clitheroe started the brighter I

in the opening minutes. Further chances went beg-1

against Horton, and saw I Gaskell miss from close-range |

ging when both Haslam and I Stewart Hickling went close, I only for the latter to eventually I break the deadlock with a|

cracking effort from 25 yards. The locals then made it 2-01 within the half hour when!

Haslam popped up at the back I post to leave Horton's keeper | stranded. And within minutes of the re-1 start, Hughes powerful run!
