Charity still needs help

THE future is beginning to look bright for a charity which provides emotional sup port for young families across the Ribble Valley, after it received a cash injection of

£31,000. In July, withdrawal of necessary funding

from the National Lottery resulted in the Home-Start scheme’s future looking bleak. Closure loomed and an estimated £77,000

was needed to keep the Whalley-based branch going for a period of 12 months. Volunteers who run the organisation - which

was set up in the borough six years ago - appealed in the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times for help to save it from extinction. Their plight touched the hearts of members

of the Ribble Valley Borough Council, who have donated a cheque for £15,000 and Clitheroe Mayor Coun. Joan Knight, who has donated £1,000 from her mayoral fund. The organisation, which currently employs

36 fully-trained volunteers, three members of staff and provides practical help to parents of children under five, has also received a generous cash boost of £15,000 from the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Primary Care Trust (PCT). Although Home-Start’s senior organiser, Mrs

Sylvia Wyatt, is delighted by the sympathy expressed by local people and donations from the councils and PCT, she warned the project was not out of the woods yet. She commented; “Support from people has

been absolutely fantastic and we are extremely grateful for the overall cash amounts. “However, once the £31,000 has gone, we will

still face a shortfall, which could make it hard for us to remain open.”

As a last-ditch effort, Mrs Wyatt says that

she is determined to submit a lottery bid in April. In the meantime, anyone wanting to donate any cash can do so by ringing 01254 825955.
