THE new lady captain, Jean Deardcn (seated second from right) with her committee at the Whalley Golf Club ladies’ section annual meeting and presentation, (s)

Golfer Anne lands quartet of top prizes

by Edward Lee

ANNE PRIOR returned from the ladies’ presentation at Whalley Golf Club with no

fewer than four trophies. She won the High Handicap Tro

phy and the Handicap Cup, as well as the Bronze Medal and Winter League plaque. Daphne Dawson and Julie

Stephenson won three trophies apiece. Daphne claimed the Greenwood

Cup, the gross award in the High Task Trophy and the Birdie Tree, while Julie was awarded with the Longworth Cup, the Margaret Lightfoot Cup and the Eclectic Cup. Joan Whittaker won the nett

award in the High Task Trophy and was also presented with the Celia Porter Memorial 'Trophy, and there

were also awards for Maybeth Sloan (Veterans’ Cup), Shirley Palich (Silver Cup and Monthly Medal), Lesley Lohou (September Pendant), Pat Richards (Past Cap tain’s Rosebowl) and Jane Smedley (Lady Captain’s Charity prize). The course at Clitheroe GC

might have an end-of-season look about it at the moment - hut mem bers continue to return some sparkling scores. A three-way tie on nett 67 in the

final medal round of the year had to be settled on the cards and Phillip Leaver’s five birdies helped him overcome Nigel Fitton and Miles Wade. Captain Ray Ashley continued

his late-season form with a nett 72, but was just one shot off the prizes in Division Two. Simon Raine squeezed Jim Sprint

into third place after both returned nett 71s, but Phil Walmsley out

gunned them by two shots to take top prize. The best six nett cards for the

season found club champion Mark Ashworth with an aggregate of 415 that was matched by the consistent Peter Harrison to share second place in the Dewhurst Trophy. But Andrew Bennie capped an

impressive season by posting a score of 413 for his best six rounds to take first place. Carol Cherry was the runaway

winner of the Bronze Division of the ladies’ stableford at Clitheroe GC. She amassed 40 points to win by

six from Rosemary Sims, with Karen Stanworth (32) in third place. It was much tighter in the Silver

Division as Jean Holt needed a card play-off to beat Marilyn Fletcher into second place. Sheila Willis was third, a point adrift.

Satisfying win for Maroon and Golds

C l i t h e r o e R V F C ................................. 9 Charley.............................................5 CLITHEROE put paid to Chor- ley’s unbeaten league run in an exciting, tight game at their fortress Littlemoor ground. The victory was set upon the

rock of tenacious defence, high work rate, superb attitude and commit ment, plus the pride of donning the maroon and gold jersey of the town's team. Clitheroe got their tactics just

right, especially in the second half when Chorley put the home side under immense pressure. In the past Clitheroe may have

folded, but good discipline prevent ed any penalties to be conceded in kicking range, and as soon as any Chorley men got the ball they were soon pressured into mistakes, to relieve the danger. In the back line there was a

reshuffle of resources. Skipper Dave Watson returned to

guide the team from inside centre, with Jim Moody moving into the scrum half berth and Nathan Peel moving from there to outside cen tre.

The forwards remained

unchanged, Ben Graves continuing his front row education at loose head prop, along side youngster- Will Jones and veteran John Proc tor. The Littlemoor outfit nearly

came a cropper right from the start, the Chorley full back returning the kick-off all of 50 yards, and he real ly should have scored. However, it was Clitheroe, after

weathering the early storm, who were first on the score sheet with a penalty, courtesy of Peel. Chorley soon hit back though,

and after drawing the defence at one side, they exploited an overlap to score in the opposite comer. Undeterred, Clitheroe fought back into the visitors’ half, and

another penalty for Peel put them ahead 6-5 at the interval. In the second half, Clitheroe's line

out finally started to function cor rectly after earlier wobbles. This gave the backs a little more

possession, and with the pack final ly getting their aggressive rucking game going, the continuity was so much better. Despite the procession, Clitheroe

failed to cross the whitewash, but were quite content to see Peel slot another penalty. Although perhaps not playing at

their very best, it was an unques tionably satisfying victory, that puts them in good heart for a tough assignment at local rivals Colne and Nelson on Saturday week, before which they travel to Ashton under Lyne for a friendly. The Cavaliers host Ashton at Lit tlemoor, kick-off 2-30 p.m.
