Doris and Elsie hit laughter trail
by Faiza Afzaal
LAUGHTER is always on the agenda for two comic women who work a t Maureen Cook- son’s lad ies ’ fashion shop in Whalley. “Doris and Elsie”, otherwise
known as Kath Eccleston, of Kemple View, Clitheroe, and Anne Wareing, formerly of Barrow, are proud to announce the launch of their third humorous book entitled “Still Alive and Kicking”. The witty duo, (pictured) met
through their work at Maureen Cookson’s more than 20 years ago. Over that time they have raised
more than £500 for Derian House Children’s Hospice from the sale of their previous two books - which proved an enormous hit with both young and older readers alike. The Doris and Elsie poems
began following a request from Radio Lancashire. The poems proved popular at the radio station and Kath and
Anne were regularly asked to appear as guests on the breakfast programme called “The Happy Daft Farm”. Re-living the memorable experi
ence, Anne, who now lives in (ilay- ton-le-Moors, said: “I t was just a great feeling to find th a t our poems were proving so popular with the listeners. “There is a lot of truth in what
we write and we have had great fun writing our third Doris and Elsie saga! “We are extremely grateful to
all our readers for their kind sup port.” Since the year 2000, the couple
have made several appearances onthe radio and have been asked to give talks at various clubs and societies across the Ribble Valley. The book is recommended as a
great read and is guaranteed- to have you chuckling to yourselves. The foreword to it has been
written by television and radio star Bernard Wrigley. Full of praise for the comical
couple he writes: “I t ’s always a pleasure to discover original poets and it’s doubly so when they prove to be as consistent as these girls. He added: “If you have bought
this book you are very likely to have bought their earlier writties - you won’t be disappointed. “If you have never read one of
their publications then welcome to the eventful world of Doris and Elsie. . . ” The book is illustrated by
Kath’s son-in-law, Martin Pendle- bury, who also lives in Kemple View in Clitheroe. I t is available from Kaydee
Bookshop, Moor Lane, Clitheroe, Maureen Cookson’s at Whalley, W.H. Smith in Blackburn, or by ringing Kath on 01200 425650. As previously, Kath and Anne
will continue to donate 50p from each sale of the £3.50 book to the charity. • Please see next month’s Val
ley magazine for a picture and poem special.
