Black Horse is ‘back in the

by Faiza Afzaal Primary school in top 5% nationally

A VILLAGE school with results that put it in the top 5% nationally has won praise from Government inspectors. St Wilfrid's Church of England

School, in Ribchester, earned top marks in its report from the Office For Standards in Education (Ofst- ed). The just-released report praises

the 96-pupil school for its high stan dards in literacy and numeracy and its special place in village life. Meanwhile the denominational

inspector has reported th a t the school is "confident and secure in its role as the hub of the Ribchester community", giving high priority to its mission as a church school. She praised "the special skills of a

conscientious, very committed staff team...helped by high-quality class room and learning support assis tants". Ofsted inspectors visited the

school in March and noted tha t results put it in the top 5% nation ally, concluding: "This is a good school. Pupils achieve well, the stan dards they attain in the basic skills

are high and pupils are keen to learn."

The report continued: "Good

teaching helps pupils to achieve well and the good leadership by the gov ernors and headteacher is giving pupils a good quality of education." In particular the inspectors noted

that able pupils use descriptive and imaginative language extremely effectively in their creative writing, that pupils relish the challenge of solving mathematical problems and that pupils behave well and are keen to learn. The key role of parents was also

acknowledged with the inspectors noting that they are highly involved in school fund-raising, so adding to pupils' resources. The inspectors concluded: "Per

sonal development, including spiri tual, moral, social and cultural development is good." Head teacher Mrs Janice Lewer

said: "We believe the report reflects the hard work of staff and pupils alike - we're very proud of our school. "I believe school days really

should be among the happiest days in a child's life. We work to ensure our pupils enjoy school, have confi dence in themselves and achieve the best results they are capable of." Chairman of the governors Mr

Tim Rainford said: "The governors would like to thank and congratu late all the staff, teaching and non teaching, for their ongoing hard work and commitment to the school. We are delighted that the inspection confirms that this is a good school." The terms of reference of Ofsted

inspections changed last September, with a new emphasis on teaching and learning. New reports include improvement

targets and during the course of their visits inspectors offer advice on how to develop a school further. At Ribchester the targets set

include improving marking and tar get setting, and increasing the depth of study in subjects outside the core curriculum. Our picture shows children at

Ribchester Primary celebrating their new play area. (G250504/8)

FOLLOWING a major revamp, a new lease of life has been given to the Black Horse Pub after its clo

sure almost three years ago. New licensees Mr and Mrs Anthony

and Yvonne Watson purchased the pub, situated in the heart of Pimlico village, in October last year, but have since trans formed it by giving it a makeover. The bright, new look is already proving

popular with the locals, who for the past three years have had to drink at home or go elsewhere for their daily tipple. The establishment now boasts contem

porary furnishings, the creation of a mod ern block of toilets, kitchen and an open- plan bar and lounge area complete with new seating. And the locals will never have to hear

the cry “no room at the inn” as the couple have developed a new garden and patio area providing comfortable surroundings and scenic views of the Ribble Valley. But until a few years ago, this was just

a distant dream for the pair, who despite having a lovely home in Studley, near Warwickshire, yearned.to move to the picturesque rural borough. “My father was brought up in Clitheroe

and when we heard licensees were required to take over the business, we thought it was too great of an opportunity to miss and and decided to venture out on our own,” said Mr Watson, who previously worked as a director for a telecommunica tions company.

they have received magnificent support from the local community and are looking forward to making more friends in the area as well as offering a traditional coun try pub with a warm and friendly atmo sphere. The pub burst into life when locals

Sunday Lakeland meet at Steel End near the southern end of Thirlmere and scrambled up the boulders and waterfalls of Dob Gill to reach Harrop Tarn, where they left the forestry behind and headed for the open fells towards Standing Crag and the summit of Ullscarf with its excellent views. Descending via Greenup

Edge to Far Easedale, mem bers continued over Low White Stones before climbing to the trig, point on High Raise where' a radio “ham” with a mobile transmitter was holding a con versation with another such enthusiast on top of a moun tain in Snowdonia. From High Raise the group

walked north-east down gentle slopes to Flour Gill, then returned to Steel End by the normally very boggy valley of

Wythburn, thankful that quite a long period of dry weather had made conditions underfoot more benign. Next month’s indoor meeting

will be an illustrated lecture by club member Mr John Beard about his sponsored bike ride for the Clitheroe group of Friends of Chernobyl Children, from Clitheroe to Santiago de Compostela via the ancient pil grim road. I t is at 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 17th, at the Clitheroe Cricket Club and non-members are welcome. The club’s next day meet will

be on Sunday, June 20th, for a visit to Swindale in the Lakes. The club’s mid-week rock-

climbing sessions held on Thursday evenings have con tinued to be well attended with visits to Troy Quarry near Haslingden and Witches Quar ry at Twiston. Any local enthusiasts inter

ested in joining these organised events should contact the coor dinator, Mr Tony Halliwell on 01200 429396.
