Sadness at death of a true gent
by Duncan Smith
ONE of Clitheroe’s most well- known and respected charac ters has died following a short
illness. Many people will be saddened to
hear of the death of Mr John Kay (pictured) last week. Born in 1934 at Low Moor, he
attended Low Moor Primary and Pendle Junior Schools. When he left Ribblesdale Coun
ty Secondary School, he worked for Robinson Builders and Slaters, where he served an apprenticeship and qualified as a plasterer. At the age of 21 he did two years’
National Service in Germany and on his return took up a new career as a male nurse at Calderstones Hospital. For the next 32 years Mr Kay
worked at both Calderstones and Brockhall, gladly taking on many different roles, but best remem bered for his work in Badger House, Brockhall.
In 1959 Mr Kay met his true
love, Brenda, whom he married at Martin Top Chapel, Rimington. They had one child, Karen, who unfortunately died in 1977 at the age of 14. Undeterred by this terri ble tragedy, the couple set about putting their lives back together. Mr Kay lived his life to the full
and would often be seen on his trusty “push iron” or stopping to have a chat. He travelled many miles with
Brenda in the beautiful local coun tryside and could always be relied on for his expertise on the culinary delights of many of the Ribble Val ley’s finest eating establishments. A keen Ribblesdale Wanderers
supporter, Mr Kay was regularly seen at Church Meadow on Satur day and Sunday afternoons. Dur ing the winter months he support ed Clitheroe FC and his viewing area was, and still is, well known to his friends. Helped by his family and his
multitude of friends, Mr Kay lived the latter part of his life as though

A LOCAL couple have made a life changing decision, selling their house and giving up their jobs to ful fil their lifelong ambition of running a hotel. Gerard and Deborah Wright,
from Blackburn, have bought the Petre Lodge Country Hotel, in Northcote Road, Langho, after securing six-figure financial backing from Bank of Scotland Corporate Banking. The nine-bedroom hotel and
restaurant, a former village primary school, is situated in a stunning loca tion in the picturesque Ribble Val ley.
The couple, who currently run the Poppenhuis Koffie Shop in nearby
Whalley, are no strangers to the hos pitality industry and have ambi tious plans for the hotel, which will also become their new home. Gerard and Deborah will use
some of their bank loan to mod ernise Petre Lodge Country Hotel. New signs have already been put up and, although the hotel has been well maintained, the couple will be refurbishing and giving each room a stylish make-over. The funding has also financed the
installation of a commercial kitchen and Gerard and Deborah aim to serve tasty home-cooked meals to both residents and non-residents in the licensed restaurant in the near future.
The couple hope the changes will
help retain existing customers and attract new guests and are already looking towards expansion in the long-term. Gerard and Deborah commented:
"We know that it's going to be hard work, but running our own hotel is a dream come true. “As we passed Petre Lodge Coun
try Hotel coming home from work one evening we saw the ‘For Sale’ sign and the rest, as they say, is his tory!” Pictured is Bank of Scotland cor
porate banking manager Sharon Scholey (left) joining the couple in a toast to their future at the Petre Lodge Country Hotel, (s)
