Proposed Trial use of Agricultural Waste Derived Fuel (AWDF) as a Fuel by Castle Cement Ltd, Ribblesdale Works


Castle Cement Limited ("the Company") has applied to the Environment Agency for a variation of their permit issued under the Pollution Prevention and Control (England and Wales) Regulations 2000, for the cement making process operated by the Company at Ribblesdale Works, Clitheroe, Lancashire. The application for a variation is the subject of a separate public notice published by the Company.


The application is for the use of Agricultural Waste Derived Fuel (AWDF) as a partial substitute for coal, providing up to 50% of the thermal energy requirements of the dry process kiln, Kiln'7. Use of this fuel on a permanent basis will only be permitted if trials are successfully completed to the satisfaction of the Agency. The trials are expected to last for approximately 6 months. AWDF is a non-hazardous solid residue produced during the rendering of animal wastes arising in the course of preparing meat for human consumption. It is described more fully in the Application, which is available for inspection on the public registers at the following locations: Environment Agency
