Seabiscuit on the crest of a wave

S E A B I S C U I T (PG ) T h e Grand C inema from Friday, November 28th.

DURING the 1930s a little race horse named Seabiscuit became America’s most unexpected idol, smashing records for speed, audi ence attendance and winnings in an amazing career that was avid ly followed by millions of people who had two things in common; mostly they were broke, but they almost all had radios. A recent American recent documentary confirms that this tale comes ready-made with absolutely every thing for a popular film - romance, tragedy, humour, triumph against the odds, athletic magnificence and, cru cially, despairing people and a traumatised animal getting second chances in their lives. Gary Ross’s feature film does so well is to highlight the gulf between the “haves” and the “have nots” and the 1930s rivalry between America’s East Coast elitists and the upstart, self-made Westerners whose hopes Seahiscuit carried on his hack along with undernourished jockey Red Pollard.

THE RIBBLE VALLEY MAYOR TO ATTEND

The Play What I Wrote is at The Lowry from Monday, December 1st to Saturday the 13th and is sure to bring sun shine to all who see it. Ben has written a play, an epic set in the French Revolu

tion, called A Tight Squeeze for the Scarlet Pimple and he wants to see it mounted. Joe, however, wants them to continue with their double act, even though they haven’t worked for two years. He believes that if they perform a tribute to More- camhe and Wise, Ben’s confidence will be restored and the double act will go on. But first, Joe needs to persuade a guest star to appear in the play what Ben wrote... The Play What I Wrote is the only show with a surprise

celebrity guest at every performance. So far they have includ ed Roger Moore, Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Glenn Close, Kevin Kline, Kylie Minogue, Joanna Lumley, Will Young, Dawn French, Richard Wilson, Nigel Havers, Ralph Fiennes and Sting. There’s no telling who will make a surprise appear ance during the Lowry run. The Play What I Wrote was written and created by Hamish

McColl, Sean Foley and Eddie Braben. McColl and Foley, together known as The Right Size, won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy. Eddie Braben is, without a doubt Morecambe and Wise’s greatest scriptwriter, having worked with them for 14 years, during which time he won five Writer of the Year awards and a BAFTA. For details of performance times and ticket prices, call The Lowry box office on 0870 787 5793.
