A SURVEY fo llowin g metaphorically if not literally in the footsteps of the TV makeover experts has revealed interesting points for house sellers. Nearly half the 3,000
respondents were attracted by a home with a blue door, next favourite red being less than half as attractive. The green doors made

open fire will have a better chance of enjoying it than in most other East Lancashire areas. Brewing coffee, fresh bread,
freshly mown grass and clean washing are other welcomed odours. Put-offs are damp, fish, drains, animals and tobacco.
THE housing figures quot
ed last week caused some interest among readers. So here are a few more local sta tistics, taken from an East Lancashire housing strategy document whose authors have distilled them from the 2001 census. The Valley’s population at that time was 54,100, a 4.4%
increase on 1991. Pendle and Ilyndburn had similar net population increases, but the •Valley was the only place in East Lancashire where more people died than were born over the decade. This dispari ty of 800 was counterbalanced by 3,200 people coming in. On average, there are only
93 people for every square kilometre of the Valley against 1,116 in Hyndburn and almost that for Black burn.. Almost certainly one very
cheerful feature of the figures is even better now. Over the years 1997-2001, the number of people working in the Val ley went up from 20,700 to 23,100. This 11.5% was dou ble anyone else’s increase!
