Bogus callers - elderly warned
by Duncan Smith
ELDERLY people, especially those living alone or in remote places, are being warned to beware of unexpected
callers at the door. The police warning
comes after a recent spate of incidents where offend ers have tricked their way into people’s houses to steal propery or cash. Inspector Bob Ford, of
Clitheroe Police, said there seemed to be three or four people involved and they were good at finding and tar geting houses where elderly people lived alone On Wednesday, October
15th, there were five offences in one afternoon at various locations in the Ribble Val ley.
A number of things
seemed to link the incidents, including descriptions of the offenders and their trick of claiming to be working on water pipes to gain access to
homes. In Copster Green, two men tried to trick their way into a house at about 2 p.m. One was stocky with dark, short hair and the other about 19, with short blond hair and wearing a white jumper. One of the men spoke
with an Irish accent. A man was also seen parking a dark-coloured saloon car at the bottom of Lovely Hall Lane at the time of the offence. At about 2-50 p.m. in
Railway View Road, Clitheroe, two men called at a house claiming to be sell ing carpets. Nothing was stolen but the householder was suspicious and reported the matter to the police, giv ing similar descriptions. ,• A-short time later in
Whalley Road, Sabden, two men called at the home of an 82-year-old partially sighted pensioner. They tricked their way inside and while one dis tracted the householder, the other rummaged through drawers. One of the men is
described as about 19 and wearing a distinctive white jumper, the other about 5ft. 5ins. tall, of slim build and with a high-pitched, childish voice. At about 4-45 p.m. the
same day an 81-year-old in Gisburn answered the door to men who claimed to have damaged a water pipe while working in the road and needed to get inside to check the water supply. Again, one of the offenders searched the house and a wedding ring was stolen. Later, in Whalley Road,
•who claimed to be fitting a washing machine next door and needed to check the water. This time there were three
Langho, a handbag and property worth more than £180 was stolen from the home of an 82-year-old who answered the door to men
report off a similar incident in the Whalley area on Tues day, October 21st. On this occasion the
householder became suspi cious and refused to let the men inside, then reported the matter to the police. Insp. Ford described them
as “despicable offences” where criminals had deliber ately targeted vulnerable and trusting people. He appealed for anyone
with information about the offenders or the dark- coloured saloon to contact Clitheroe Police immediate ly on 01200443344. He also warned people to
let anyone into your home if , you are unsure of them or at all suspicious of their motives. Insp. Ford also asked rela
be on their guard and never to take unexpected callers at the door at face value. Never
men, but again the descrip tions were similar and one had an Irish accent. Following on from those
five incidents in one after noon, police received a
Car crash victim is airlifted to hospital
ANOTHER weekend acci dent on the notorious A682 Gisburn to Blacko road resulted in a Pendle driver being airlifted to hospital on Sunday morning. Emergency crews cut
Robert Clarke (22), of Commercial Street, Brier- field, from the wreckage of his vehicle. Mr Clarke was driving a
Rover 600 which crashed into a solid stone gatepost and dry stone wall on the A682 between Blacko and the Moorcock Inn. He was trapped by his
legs and the fire and rescue service was called to free him. It took more than an hour to extricate him from the wreckage. s Paramedics and a Basics
doctor treated him while the rescue went ahead, and he was then taken to the Royal Preston Hospital with what were thought to be serious leg injuries. His passenger, 16-year-
old Toni Fennesy of Colne, was treated at Burnley General Hospital for whiplash injuries, but was later released.
shortly after 11-30 a.m. on a left hand bend halfway between Blacko Bar and the Moorcock Inn. No other vehicle was involved. The road was closed to

traffic for several hours from both directions while the emergency services dealt with the incident and police accident investigators pieced together the cause of the crash. Mr Clarke was yesterday
comfortable in hospital and was expected to be released shortly.
Big Jack is guest of honour at dinner
FOOTBALL legend Jack Charlton O.B.E. was guest of honour at a fund-raising dinner in Chipping.’ Tickets for the village
hall event were much in demand when news broke of who the guest would be, and the event on Saturday fulfilled all its promise. Fittingly, the proceeds
will go to upgrading the vil lage playing fields, encour aging local youngsters to get involved in sport and maybe'follow in Big Jack’s illustrious footsteps. After a pre-dinner recep
tion. sponsored by M&S Money, the guests enjoyed a five-course meal including liqueurs kindly provided by Threshers of Longridge.
The proceedings were
marshalled by MC James H. Reeve whose deadpan humour entertained the audience, together with comedian Brendan Healey.. The concluding auction
had shirts signed by Sven Goran Erickson, Jonny Wilkinson and, of course, Jack Charlton, together with hot air balloon trips and lessons in gliding, fly ing, skiing and golf. The evening raised a
total of just over £6,000 and heightened awareness of the fantastic work being undertaken to develop vil lage facilities.
This was one of a series ...... -V
of events in support of the “Chipping Recreational
Development Committee” which is well on course with its exciting plans to improve the playing fields. This will involve an astro
turf pitch, bowling green, skate board park and improvements for the exist ing football pitches. ' Once completed they will
be a major boost for the Trough of Bowland and one of the many groups to
; benefit is the hugely suc cessful Chipping Junior Football Club whose bur geoning membership will certainly welcome the. improvements. • Pictures of the event
will be appearing in the Valley, out on November 6th.

tsa 1 m sore by Linda Bloomfield
NEWSPAPERMEN and women throughout Pen dle, Burnley, the Ribble Valley and further afield have been devastated by the sudden death of one of their own - the incompa rable reporter and photog
rapher, Tim Procter. Tim died on Monday
night. He was 63. He collapsed on the pave
ment in Bank Parade, Burnley, and despite prompt attention by a cardiologist at the nearby medical practices, the expertise of paramedics during the jour ney to Burnley General Hospi tal, and the valiant efforts of doctors, they failed to save him. Within such a short space of
time we on this newspaper lost a valued and much admired colleague who had been part of the newspaper scene for nearly 50 years. The area lost a quite brilliant photographer who captured so many important events for posterity, many peo ple simply lost a very good friend, and most of all his wife, Margaret, lost her beloved hus band and James and Ian their proud father. She months ago Tim became
a grandfather for the first time. Young Jake Edward Euan Procter was the apple of his eye. George Timothy Procter was
born into a prominent local family and grew up at their home at Delph Mount, Nelson. He never strayed from this area for the rest of his life. Tim was educated in a
preparatory school, then as a boarder at the Royal Grammar
