AMERICAN-STYLE cheerleading is the latest subject on the currriculum at a Ribble Valley primary school. Children at Gisburn Primary School had

great fun learning how to be cheeerleaders, with help from Burnley Football Club. Its Rural Schools Project is working with smaller

schools across the district, helping children to experience a wide range of sporting activities and discover which they enjoy most. Gisburn headteacher Mr Andrew Symonds

said: “As soon as we found out that cheer leading was a possibility, we jumped at the chance to give those children who aren’t foot ball mad the chance to keep fit in an unusual and enjoyable way.” It proved a very popular experience for all the children, who had never done anything

like it before. Aimee Smith, from Class 3, said: “I really liked dancing to the music. I would love to do

it again.” So the next time that the school’s football

team takes to the field they might just have their very own cheerleaders on the touchline to give them support.

Work starts on hospital build

WORK has begun on a £28m. hospital devel opment that will benefit patients across the Ribble Valley. The major development and expansion is

under way a t Burnley General Hospital, where many patients from the Valley receive treatment. The signing of contracts between East Lan

cashire Hospitals NHS Trust and Catalyst Healthcare marked the start of the three-year project. Mr John L. Thomas, chief executive of the

trust, said: “I am delighted that the trust has signed contracts on this major development at Burnley General Hospital. The project will provide the trust with superb new facilities for

patients, staff and visitors alike.” “Visitors will see a new main entrance with

parking close by. A 15-station renal dialysis unit will be built and will be a boost for patients undergoing treatment as it means that they can now receive treatment on their own doorstep. There are currently no renal dialysis facilities in the Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale area. There will be 170 beds with in the new building and there will be facilities within the new outpatient departments for radiology, satellite pharmacy, ECG and der matology. “The new development will also allow all

medical specialties for in-patients and out patients to be located together in one build ing. The out-of-date Victorian accommoda tion, containing Wards 10 tol6, will be demol ished as a result of this new development.” The estimated completion date for the development is spring 2006.

Glamour proves a real boost

TWO days of glamour, entertain ment, food, champagne and cat- walk chic raised £1,000 a t a recent event. Maureen Cooksons, of Whal-

ley, linked up with Michelin starred Northcote Manor, Lang- ho, to host the first-ever catwalk fashion show at the store. Customers who had travelled

from as far as Gloucester enjoyed lunch a t the hotel before they were transported by coach to the store to see some of the country’s top models showing off the latest designs. International labels including

Marc Caine, Tuzzi, Zaek, Sand and a variety of others were mod elled on the day. Proprietor Hilary Cookson,

said: “We have worked with Northcote for some time now as we share a commitment to bring the best of th e N o r th West together for our customers. “I t was absolutely fantastic. Everybody enjoyed themselves so

much.” The day raised £1,000 which

will be given to the neonatal intensive care unit, a t Queen’s Park Hospital, Blackburn. “This was th e f irs t time we

have held a fashion show a t the store and judging by the great success, we will be holding anoth er one next year,” added Hilary. Our picture shows guests and

New shop is a real ‘gift’ for those in search of presents

WE HAVE all been there before - a special occasion with a gift to buy just around the corner and nothing in the

way of ideas.. Sound fam il ia r? T hen your

prayers have been answered. Presentation is a new gift shop at

Castlegate, Clitheroe, offering many contemporary ideas for every

occasion. As well as pens, hand-made cards,

desktop items and picture frames you have never set eyes on before, a range of glassware, china and pewter, silver jewellery and acces sories for both men and women are available. Owned by John and Rachel

Ormerod, the business has been trading since 1998 in the pic turesque village of Barrowford. Due to popular demand by cus

tomers, the opening of the second shop, in Clitheroe, now brings a unique range of presents to people across the Ribble Valley. The new shop opened on Thurs-

day and the expansion has created three new jobs. Mother-of-two Mrs Ormerod

said: “When you are struggling to buy a present, we can find you the ideal one - some often only avail able in cities.” The shop also offers a free gift wrapping service, donations for

which will go to the NSPCC. Thanks to the generosity of cus tomers a t the Barrowford branch, the charity has already received around £2,000 collected from dona tions in the past five years. “The shop is filling a niche in

Clitheroe and customers can be assured of a personal service with a smile from the manageress, Miss Shan Wringe,” added Mrs Ormerod. Exclusive glassware, including

Leonardo, LSA and Ritzenhoff.is sold at the shop at affordable prices, the majority under £20. “I t took us a month to set the

shop up and my husband did most of th e hard work. The interior retains many of its original features, including the stone flag and wooden flooring,” said Mrs Ormerod. “We pride ourselves on
