fer defeat in the second round of the cup despite an eight-wicket haul from Gillespie. Padiham were bowled ou t for

108, but Clitheroe were then shot out for just 95 in reply. Padiham elected to b a t a f te r

winning the toss, b u t took over three overs before either opener registered a rim. Both Umar Saddique (5) and

Waqar Ali (9) fell in consecutive Gillespie overs and the pro went on to finish with amazing figures of 8- 15.

M a rk Ha rg reav e s claimed David Hall in his first over for six,

while skipper Anthony Hall joined the pro in registering a duck. With Padiham reeling on 29-6,

i t seemed only a m a t te r of time before the innings collapsed. But an unbeaten 26 from Kevin

Hitchon added some respectabili ty, and further scores from Gary Pethard (21) and Saeed Riaz (19) took the score passed three figures. Clitheroe looked odds-on cer

tainties to rattle the runs off in no- nonsense fashion. But the visitors, and profession

al Pankaj Tripathi in particular were to have their say, as opener Andy Burns fell to Stephen Gee for a duck. Wickets fell a t regular intervals

as Padiham took the win against all the odds. Gillespie top-scored with 18, as

Tripathi (4-24), Hitchon (3-19) and David Hall (2-20) all played a significant part.

Double disappointment as Whalley suffer more misery

WHALLEY’S miserable season con tinued, as they crashed to the bottom of the Jennings Ribblesdale League with a reverse a t home to Great Har wood. And 24 hours later, they saw their

Ramsbottom Cup hopes dashed a t Cherry Tree. Oswaldtwistle Immanuel’s las t

gasp victory a t Bamoldswick, meant Mark Whelan’s side slipped to the foot of the table - level on points with the New Lane outfit and Padiham. And while that taking place, Whal

ley went down to a 114-run defeat at home to title-chas ing Great H a r wood.

After losing the toss, Whalley were

made to field first, and were put to the sword early on, with the visitors reaching 112-0 after just 24 overs. I. Howarth then fell to a superb

running catch a t long off by Martin Davies for 53, before fellow opener and paid man Andrew Crook joined him th e p avilion for 55 - clean- bowled by Simon Gorton. Russell Whalley (4) departed simi

larly, while Houldsworth and Deafey both left having notched 20 apiece. After looking likely to score well

B CLITHEROE CC’s

Under 11 A team continued their winning ways away at Edenfield. Winning the toss the visi

tors elected to bat and Bow- ness made light of the Eden field attack, scoring a fine 20, shortly followed by a bril liant 14 from Nuttall on his debut. The rest of the Clitheroe

batsmen ably supported and the final total was 267. Edenfield were soon under

pressure with Bowness tak ing a wicket in the first over. And with wickets for

Plant and McKenna, then another dead eye run out by the latter, the local side ran out easy winners by 48 runs. The team then progressed

to the semi-final of the cup, despite a less than convinc ing b a ttlin g performance against Great Harwood. Batting first the Clitheroe

denied the full points by failing to bowl out the visi tors, af ter they managed ju s t 202-8 in rep ly to Read’s 240-5. A run-rate defeat befell

side could only muster a total of 223, the top-scorer by a long way being the extras column. In the latter stages the vis

itors bowled well, and only Bowness, N u t ta l l and Dewhurst managed to add to the actual total. Great Harwood in their

innings got off to a slow but steady start, until McKenna came into the a tta ck and claimed two vital wickets. Brilliant bowling by Dent, under pressure, brought two

more wickets and a further wicket by Bowness left the visitors needing seven from the last over.

Dewhurst produced a

tight final over, leaving the away side still seven short of the Clitheroe total by the end of the match. The Under 13s gained

their third league victory of the season with a compre hensive 59 run victory over local rivals Whalley A. Batting first, the Chat-

burn Road team made a steady start, with Richard Blackburn picking up the pace with a solid unbeaten 14 in th e middle of the innings. The final pair of Anthony

Collinge and James Sharpies cu t loose in the la s t four overs, scoring 20 and 19 respectively with a succes sion of boundaries. Clitheroe’s n e tt score of

70, after deducting for wick ets lost, was always going to be a tall order for the visitors, and needing to score quickly, they lost early wickets against some accurate bowl ing.

A superb hat-trick from

Ian Scott was followed by two wickets in two balls by Mark Higson, and the loss of ten wickets, left Whalley with a net score of 11. All the Clitheroe bowlers

deserve credit for their efforts, producing a vast improvement in form to their previous match. B CHATBURN seconds suffered two narrow defeats

over the weekend. On Saturday, Cononley

batted first and, assisted by a lacklustre fielding perfor mance, scored 155. Rod Booth (4-35), Geoff Lam bert (2-22) and Amar Zulfi (2-24) were the major wicket takers. In reply Chatburn were

given an excellent start with Booth (43) and Geoff West (21), before Amar Zulfi scored 20 and the batting order collapsed. Despite a late recovery

from Lambert (15), John Reynolds (13) and Russell Braithwaite (17), Chatbum were bowled out for 149, los ing by just six runs. On Sunday Chatburn

entertained Third Division T h ornton in the second round of the Cowling Cup. Chatburn b a tted first,

with all the early b a tte rs contributing, Ted Topham (37) and Chris Waddington (26) scored the bulk of the runs. An aggressive 55 not out

gave from Lambert, scored off 28 balls gave the score respectability as Chatbum finished on 214-7. In reply Thornton started

patiently against accurate bowling, particularly from Booth and Braithwaite, but lost two early wickets to give Chatbum hope. However th is was an excellent batting wicket and

over 200, the home side somehow managed to stem the flow of runs to finish on 188-9, as Gorton ended with figures of 5-67. The hosts were looking for a solid

opening, b ut after Andy P ra t t had been caught in the gully first ball by

Deafey, the outlook looked bleak. Lee Kearsley (13) and Davies (15)

werp both caught behind, while tail- ender Dave Westwood (12) ended the day as the only other batsmen in double figures. That collapse saw them bowled out

for 74, and slip to the foot of the table for the first time this season. Whalley would then tu rn their

attentions to the Ramsbottom, in a bid to add one bright spot to a some what fledgling league season. But high-flyers Cherry Tree were

to prove too much on th e i r own patch, as the home side eventually booked a semi-final b e r th by five wickets. Winning the toss and batting first,

Whalley’s innings again started in the worst possible fashion, after Kearsley hit Robbins straight up in the air, and was caught behind for a duck. Davies (3) followed soon after, but

an eventual half-century from profes sional Neil Cordingley added some spice to the innings. He b a t te d v a l ia n t ly alongside

Andy P r a t t before th e la t te r was clean-bowled by Mohammed for 33, while Fielden and Westwood kept the ta i l s ta b le w ith a n in th wicket unbeaten partnership of 35. That left Mark Whelan’s men on

175-8, but Cherry Tree were well on their way to overhauling that with an opening stand of 81. Whalley then got back into pro

ceedings, taking four quick wickets to leave the hosts on 130-4 with 10 overs remaining.

With the match very much in the

balance, i t was home paid man Naeem Ashraf who hit the decisive runs, ending a t the crease on 56 after arriving as third man. And d e sp ite th e ef fo r ts of the

eventually the Thornton batters took control of the situation as the Chatburn fielders wilted in the heat, reaching 215-3 with five overs remaining. The wicket takers came in

the form of Lambert (1-36) and Braithwaite (1-75). Chatbum should not feel

too disappointed with this defeat as they contributed to an excellent game of cricket, and made their illustrious opponents fight all the way. B RIMINGTON kept a grip on the lead a t the top of the mid-week Clitheroe and D is tr ic t Cricket League when they defeated River side by nine wickets in a much tighter game than the scoreline suggests. Chipping A are keeping

the pressure on the leaders a f te r a big win against Ribchester. A Vin Wilkinson 50 and 3-10 by Chris Jacques did the damage. An Andy Gardner half-

century was not enough to stave off defeat for Chipping Ramblers against Calder- stones for whom Keith Gill also notched 50. In the other games Catholic SC inflicted a 63 run defeat on Low Moor.
