POWER WITHOUT THE PRICE TAG By Jonathan Crouch
The most powerful diesel engine you can specify in Skoda’s Octavia is an impressive piece of engineering. Although the TD I130 is an engine that has seen service in the Volkswagen and Audi ranges for some time now and doesn’t boast the latest common-rail systems, its ‘Pump Duse’ technology has been steadily refined to the point where the VW Group - of which Skoda is a key constituent - are recognised as gurus of performance diesels. Being a ‘premium’ engine in the Octavia line up, the TDI 130 isn’t available with the entry level Classic and

Ambiente trim levels, instead being-reserved for plusher Elegance and Laurin & Klement models. Prices start at around £14,300. On the road, the Octavia TDI 130 with its six speed gear box is particularly impressive. In this most powerful diesel model, a revised cylinder head design, with innovative pistons and a high-pressure injection pump have created a car that can create 2281b ft of torque at only l,900rpm. Rest to sixty takes 9.5 seconds on the way to 128mph, so it’ll be quick enough for most. An overall fuel consumption figure of 52.3mpg is allied to a
C02 emissions figure of just 146g/km. It’s this combination of low sticker price, an excellent record of reliability, and the TDI 130 engine’s blend of power and penny-pinching parsimony that
_ _ makes this Octavia such a beguiling proposition. Available

'Wi in regular five-door hatch as well as estate versions, it’s a very well rounded package. Only the most prehistoric snobs will balk at the Skoda badge on the nose, less ignorant buyers
recognising that the Czech company has now become a byword for quality without the price mark up.
